Burnaby, BC - population 223,218 has several town centers and several great skylines. The two largest are Metrotown and Brentwood, which both will be adding several 40-70 storey towers in the skyline in the next 10 years.

Brenwood today.

Metrotown today.

My take is that Metrotown has a better skyline today, but in the future Brentwood will have a better, more clustered, skyline as more tall towers will start construction soon.

An interesting statistic I just learned. If all of Calgary's proposals and UC come to fruition(unlikely for some), by the end of this boom, Calgary will have 76 buildings over 100 meters. We are already 2nd in the country for buildings over 100 meters (on the municipal scale, not metro... I think we're 3rd for metros), and that would seriously solidify that position. Pretty cool. I didn't even know we were 2nd.

1. Toronto - 173 (71 UC)
2. Calgary - 56 (8 UC)
3. Vancouver - 48 (6 UC)
4. Montreal - 41 (6 UC)
5. Mississauga - 19 (4 UC)
6. Edmonton - 15 (3 UC)

As for the Big M, we ought to concentrate on matching vancouver's numbers. (We actually have 8 UC btw).

Oh okay, the database should be changed to reflect that then. It only lists 6 UC.

I usually take one or two trips a year. This year I really wanted to take a one-in-a-lifetime trip to Yellowknife, with stops in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and then to Yellowknife (while taking as many photos as possible). A sit-down looking at the numbers and expense to make that trip happen didn't really pan out. But I do want to get up there some year (the third Sunday in August is Yellowknife's Marathon)...

I still haven't been to Montreal either. All these photos I see from Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, etc., makes me want to travel to places other than where I've spent most of my life (Vancouver, Toronto, Windsor, Niagara Falls and of course my hometown of Fort Frances, ON). Thanks for the photos!

As a budget backpacker type guy who travels alone, any suggestions of where to stay in Calgary or Edmonton that is budget friendly (like Hostelling International, etc)? Thanks guys!

look at those montreal neighborhoods: now that's some meat. that's at least a place that can justify a plane ticket for someone who likes cities. i am so tired of picking my way through halifax, choosing the same few routes that don't make it feel like a village. i was in geneva last week and realized it only has about 400,000 people itself.

and yet.

you just can't have a functional, traditionally urban city if the residential density isn't there. it can't be done. the streets will be too quiet, and the density of restaurants and cafés and services will go down; the grain will become less fine and people will turn their attentions to television or hiking or other non-city things, and their appearance will take on a utilitarian cast.

time to fly to montreal i think. i'll miss the ocean, but really, nova scotia is best enjoyed as a beach/rural/cottage destination.

(i know boosterism has had a rough ride here as of late, so i have thoughtfully provided the inverse)

Montreal has good, solid old bones. With the present boom adding a dozen or so new towers in and around the core, things are definitively looking up :-)

Cool! Too bad it didn't pan out the way you planned. However, you could try CouchSurfing.org. I did it a couple times and met some really great people... it's totally free usually and pretty easy to find people willing to take you in. Also, there is a ride share site I used once to get from Kelowna to Vancouver. Only cost me 20 bucks. There's some ideas for cost cutting for your trip!

Yes, very thoughtful of you, thank you. But I'm sure you'll be very happy back in Montreal and I'll try to move on and adjust to life after your wonderful inverse-boosterism has sadly passed.

Burnaby only has 3 right now, but has 24 under construction or proposed in just Metrotown alone. When you include the rest of Burnaby (Brentwood, Lougheed, and Edmonds), it will likely skyrocket past Edmonton and Mississauga. Right now Burnaby has more (100m) towers under construction than all those cities except for mighty Toronto.

Burnaby has 6 towers over 100 meters complete right now. But for the purposes of the list I made, I only included UC towers, not proposed.

The completed towers over 100 are: Chancellor Metrotower II Centrepoint Metrotower I Reflections

and there are currently 8 UC, with 5 of them being over 130 meters. Tied with Calgary for number of UC, but a higher number of towers UC over 130 meters than Calgary. Very impressive.
