Bah, when I first heard the name, I thought it sounded terrible. But, the more I think about it, the more I've gotten used to it. This is very much like when apple chose the name iPad

People will get used to the name and it will eventually become a relevant one in the area. I figure that if a nation against which we committed genocide and which we continue to marginalise would like to get some recognition in our new transit system, I can — it up long enough to get used to Pimisi.

It's true! People thought iPad was the Worst Name Ever(TM), for what? 36 hours?

Anyway, the more I think about it, maybe it's time to rebrand the whole "neighbourhood", given that the name Lebreton Flats is kind of unlovely, and basically synonymous with everything that's the worst about Ottawa and the NCC. Lebreton would still have the street honoring him...

Either way, hire an artist to inlay something neat and eley in the new path that's supposed to run along the aqueduct and install some interpretive signs, done. I was flabbergasted to learn earlier this year that there were eels in the aqueduct, and i bet others would be inspired by them, too: they go all the way from the ocean to here, and beyond upriver, if they can get past the dams, for Pete's sake! That's pretty damn cool. I'm all for honoring them. The fact that the awesomeness of these beasts has been observed for aeons by the Algonquins is just a double plus (and a credit to the Nation and their culture), why not recognize?

That part of Wellington will be replaced with the train guide way. Has any other city been dumb enough to give the natives exclusive rights to name a station regardless of whether or not it makes sense?

This is another example of the City failing to engage with the public. They could have held a design contest where everyone in the city is invited to come up with a design scheme (under certain parameters such as palette) then get people to vote on it, etc. You know, get the public to get behind the plan. But oh no, they've got to do it internally.
I can live with the nose, but the paint job is horrible. It looks outdated already; again, those damn arches!!!

Just for the fun of it, I made up my own livery. I like the idea of a solid coloured scheme as opposed to getting to fancy with racing stripes and what not. Pardon my terrible photoshop skills.

A bit to much red for my taste, but good photoshopping skills IMO.

I just watched the story on CBC News. Our citizen representative on the transit commission is excited to change the name and it will be decided next week. The first time I have ever seen the citizen representative make any decision, and in a way, a totally meaningless decision. So, is the citizen representative actually representing the citizens on this? Probably not. So why have them?

How many will remember the significance of this name in 5 years? 1% of the population I would think or less. It becomes a name with no context to the general public.
For those who won't remember the significance of the name, and want to find out.... In this digital age, just type the word into a search engine such as Google, and bob's-your-uncle! : - P

Believe me, as a person who had to learn english as a second language, how to pronounce "i" is not as simple. "imi" tends to be pronounced "ihmih" or "ihmuh" (similar, imitate, etc...). Same for "ini" (initiative, definition, affinity...). I think the last letter has to be a "e" in order to harden the "i" ex: crime, vs criminal. I doubt rules apply to proper nouns anyway, especially non-english ones.

I Agree 100%. I never liked "Blair" and always refered to that location as "Gloucester".

Station names do not need to be named specifically after streets. If one looks at the metro in Paris, many of the station names are the names of squares not individual streets. For this reason I believe that Tunney's and LeBreton should remain as station names. These names represent whole areas which residents at least are familiar with. It gives tourists a sense of the whole surrounding area. It is no different than having a stop called Westboro, as there is no street by the same name. For this reason I would also retain the name Parliament - Parlament.
With respect to the name Pimissi I believe it is a poor choice. If we are committed to it then I would change the name of Bayview to LeBreton and cchange LeBreton to Pimissi. Since the station names represent areas and not street names then this would be acceptable for wayfinding. I don't believe we are pandering to the Algonquins, but I believe we or they could come up with a better choice. I do beleive that most of what we are seeing is political correctness. That being said I certainly agree that Dominion should be changed to Kitchissippi and Baseline to Algonquin. Since Dominion is so close to the Ottawa River and Westboro Beach it makes sense to call it Kitchissippi. Dominion is such a small street I doubt that many people could find it on a map. Dominion sounds like some relic from our colonial past. We have enough names honouring our past colonial masters. I have in fact previously sent an email to my councillor requesting this.

Still with Pimisi...

There was a report on Radio-Canada this morning and in French it was pronounced "pimmy-zee".

I was also wondering about the historic aboriginal name for the area around the Chaudière Falls and Rapids, which I assumed had to exist. It turns out the Algonquin name for this area was Asticou.

I guess they probably considered this one but ruled it out to avoid confusion with the Centre Asticou public service school in Hull.

Note that Asticou was also one of the names considered for the merged city now known as Gatineau but was ruled out because it too closely evoked a popular swear word in Canadian French.

Half-baked political correctness even. It's very unfortunate.

If we are going to go with 'Pimisi' we should rebrand the entire Lebreton area as Pimisi.

Honestly, Lebreton doesn't have much of a positive history to it. A notorious industrial slum for a century and then empty for decades as a result of political mismanagement.

Naming the area Pimisi is the least we can do for a nation of people than we committed genocide against.

For crying out loud - Nunavut nearly got denied the postal abbreviation NU because of what the French word nu means. It was semi-bilingual anglos, not francophones, whose prudish Protestant knickers were in a knot.

Confusion with Centre-Asticou? Nonsense. 'Sti.

"Asticou" was translated directly into French ("Chaudière") and English ("Kettle") as the name of the falls. (By association, it's also where Kettle Island gets its name.) Linguistically and historically, I'd much prefer Asticou to Pimisi. Heck, "Asticou" should be the name for the entire redeveloped area of Le Breton Expropriation and the future river islands development.

Personally I actually like the name Asticou and have no issues with it.

But if they were to name the station that I see several people a day getting off the train there and expecting their government training course at Asticou to take place right there.

Interesting. Why not use Chaudiere then? We've already got the island as a landmark too.

Exactly! And with the upcoming reno of those islands by Windmill (fingers crossed), there's all the more reason to rename it as such. This brings back their 1st criterion of naming the station after a nearby district/landmark. Besides, the plan for that area supposedly includes an Aboriginal Centre on Victoria Island. IMO, Chaudière is probably the best name to appease all three parties (English/French/Aboriginal), and doesn't require having a pronunciation in English/French.

With that said, I could live with Asticou. Pimisi is a bit of an odd choice, but whatever... I'll still refer to the area and, by consequence the station, as LeBreton - I suspect most people will anyway.

And speaking of Pimisi - the station was supposed to have an aboriginal theme to go along with the name, no? Will it have an eel motif?

If they must insist on including 'Pimisi', they could rename Bayview rather than LeBreton. It's a rather generic name and it's not like Bayview has the history of LeBreton as it is on landfill. Heck, Bayview Station is at a location where eels might conceivably have once lived...

It's possible. But you know what else is possible? You being racist. Do what the politically-correct people say to avoid such an accusation.

I don't mind Pimisi instead of Lebreton as long as its the only confusing and disorienting station on the line. With it being the only one people will be more likely to remember it. Any more than one and it will get annoying.
