Here is the article,

New $10 million expansion of building project on Lower Queen

The Guardian

Published on July 15, 2013

Tim Banks of APM has announced the company is expanding its construction project on Lower Queen Street in downtown Charlottetown.

APM has been working on a major restoration of the former Kays Brothers Building, now the Welsh Owen Building, for the past year.

With the co-operation of the City of Charlottetown and the Heritage Board, APM has started to add an additional 35,000 square feet to the complex, expanding to the corner of Queen and Water streets, said Banks.

“The new build will coincide nicely with the authentic charm and feel of the downtown core,” said Banks. “Its design is fresh and modern but will also tie in nicely with the historical feel of downtown. It’s really going to revitalize the area.”

In total, APM is investing $10.3 million towards the entire project and expects numerous retailers and offices to locate there. Campbell Lea, Barristers and Solicitors, have already signed on as tenants.

Ken Godfrey, partner of the Charlottetown-based law firm, explains their decision to move.

“By moving to this excellent new location and incorporating the latest technology available, we will be better able to serve our existing clients and expand our client base. We’re very excited by the ideas put forward by APM’s design team to make our space extremely welcoming and professional when complete.”

More tenants are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

They have nearly completed the big hole for the basement. Footings will be in soon. Try to get a pic this weekend.

UGLIEST BUILDING IN CHARLOTTETOWN

For 13 years it has sat empty. When are they going to sell this eyesore. With it's door covering on the windows, ugly façade and painted windows, this is my vote as the ugliest in the city.
Recent talk of beautifying University Ave won't work until they get rid of this ugly building. Surely there is talk to have someone do something with this building. Where is APM?
I think the Tweel's don't want to let it go and the city is just letting them get away with it.

That building has been hideous for at least the last 35 years!!

I remember when it was reclad (I use that term lightly here)

I had no idea that it has been vacant since the turn of the century. It's a firetrap pure and simple. I'm surprised that it has survived this long!!

The Maritime Electric building looks simillarlly ugly but at least it's in use. I don't know what it is about the Tweels but I never hear anything good about them and all their buildings and projects always seem to be a joke.

So an update on the former Zellers space in Summeride. Giant Tiger will cover 23,000 sq. ft. and Sport Chek will occupy 13,500 sq. ft.

Here is the hole in the ground for this building.

Glad to see something being done with this empty property. Also, the empty lot
on the corner of Dorchester and Queen where Starbucks is going.

Prince and Grafton?

Has anyone heard anything more on this project. I know there was a stoppage, and if I'm correct, a complete lack of funds killed it.
What in heck are they going to do here? The signs are still up but I won't
hold my breath. Is there the possibility they are waiting for more funds.
Some big hole to fill if it is scrapped for good.

I heard the city was supposed to have it already filled back in, then they didn't so I'm kind of curious also.

That should be a good move for them. A seasonal location in Cavendish (perhaps at the boardwalk) would also be a goldmine!

Convention Centre Opens

Here is a stitched photo of the new convention centre on the Charlottetown waterfront. Take a trip down Queen St. and take a look at the view. It's absolutely beautiful! The boardwalk isn't open as yet due to a delay in the lighting at the back of the building. Once installed, the boardwalk will be complete from Victoria Park to Peakes.

This happens to be one of the nicest buildings I've seen in awhile.

That's awesome! Hopefully there will be some big events there in the next little bit. More and more bands seem to be playing in centres like that. The Casino NB events calendar is pretty impressive. Joe Satriani, Styx, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Mathew Good, Celtic Thunder, Hanson.
