Mulberry's Market Mall

Mulberry's Market Mall has apparently been sold to Smitty's. I am told that the family will continue to operate the one downtown, but have sold the Market Mall location to Smitty's.

So it looks like that building under construction at 8th St & Louise is going to be the Rockadero. I saw an ad in the Saskatoon Express (complete with Flintstone-like cartoon characters) advertising at as "Saskatoon's swankiest dinner lounge". It's supposed to be open by Christmas.

I passed by there today with my girlfriend and mentioned that it looked like an oil change place with the big windows.

Glad to hear that it's not, because it doesn't make sense (ha) and a "50s" like diner lounge is a pretty neat idea.

Thumbs up Parcel A Proposal - "The Banks"

I was looking at the agenda for next week's Municipal Planning Commission (available here), and I see that the proposal by LeFevre & Company for Parcel A at River Landing is now going through the approvals process.

The proposal is for four buildings with a mix of residential and commercial with interior streets linking the development to its surroundings.

I took some screenshots from the meeting agenda for all of you to see. I think this proposal is fantastic! I'm excited to see construction begin.

Wow this is really going to be unique for Saskatoon. LeFevre & Company have a clear vision for today's live work needs.

Thanks for posting Echoes.

That's weird because I helped make the concrete pits for an oil change place. Maybe it changed hands since then???

Rockadero

The Rockadero thing is the owner's idea of a joke. It's an oil change. Considering how long it takes to get the permits in place from the city for something like the chiropractic clinic conversion on 7th, I'd be impressed if they managed to switch from oil change to 50's bar in a couple of months.

Would they really go to the trouble of taking out ads in the local media? If so and it really is an oil change, I'm not sure they'd be the kind of people I'd trust with my car.

Bids close for Third Avenue United Church

By Hannah Spray, The StarPhoenix
August 15, 2013

The future of Third Avenue United Church will hopefully crystallize over the coming week.

The church board’s building committee will be considering proposals for the purchase of the historic downtown church, after bids closed on Thursday.

The committee will begin looking at the bids starting Friday morning, said Peter Barnacle, the church board’s chair. It will bring a recommendation to the next board meeting on Aug. 21 and the board will consider that recommendation and make its own decision, which will be taken to the River Bend Presbytery for approval on Aug. 22.

“It won’t be until that point that we would be able to say with any certainty that there is a conclusion,” Barnacle said.

As of Thursday afternoon, the board had received one bid from Third Avenue Centre and was expecting at least one more by the end of the day. [...]

When I saw the name Rockadero go up on the building I assumed they had changed the format from oil change to Rock Climbing facility (because of the "tower"). I hope it is not an oil change...rather see something more dynamic there.

Speaking of dynamic, I am loving the conceptual drawings for Parcel A. My wife and I were quite recently looking to downsize but wanted something close to river, broadway or downtown....this looks like it has potential for us. Any word on timelines, construction??

Interesting development..Not the original 6-8 stories designated for that parcel, lower density than I would have thought for a prime center city development. Looks more like what they are planning to build in suburbs like Evergreen.. but not nearly as tall as developments like Nutana Suburban Centre has been building recently.

Wow, with downtown developments like this..and River Center I & II, AGS, Yellow Quill building on 4th, the new Police station, Court of Queen's Bench Extension, Nexus Building, 220 Wall Street, Thomson Jasper Building, BHP Billiton building (all developments 5 stories or less).. Saskatoon is truly on its way to being low density/sprawl capital of Canada!

From what I've heard, shovels will be in the ground in the spring. And considering that the same developer is building a townhouse development on Avenue D on spec (and it's progressing quickly), I think LeFevre means business and this won't be anything like the Parcel Y runaround. He's got the cash and know-how to get it done too.

I'm loving all the potential for the commercial space (and patios!) in this development.

It's a shame that the most architecturally interesting feature, the curved wall, will be mostly hidden from the street view. Oh well, still looks good anyway.

I don't know if it's been mentioned or not, but the Taj restaurant is closed.

And man, I'm loving what LeFevre is planning for that site! It'll be nice to walk down 19th and have something to look at.
