I go to the Gym at the 85 Fort Garry, I get a nice fourth story view of the site. There is definitely some goings on.

Demolition has begun on the old shelter at the St. Vital duck pond – the prelude to several new projects at the park.

Civic officials said this afternoon the shelter will be replaced with a modern pavilion, which will include two covered picnic zones, interior seating, a fireplace and restroom facilities.

Other projects at St. Vital Park include replacing the summer restroom facility and the park’s boat launch, riverbank stabilization, an improved dock, and better lighting.

The budget for the new duck pond pavilion, including demolition of the existing shelter, is $1 million

I'll have to agree with that!

Although, I do kind of like the old, abandoned feel you get at some of the City parks that are tucked away down trails you normally wouldn't see in a car.

Good article today regarding Portage and Main. I feel it is one of the biggest blights on our downtown, and that a redevelopment of this corner should be hugely important to those involved in the overall success of the cores revitalization.

You can put as many people as you want downtown but if you're not creating pedestrian friendly environments and streetscapes, you are failing at the most basic level.

This was the winning entry from the 2006 competition.

With the topic of foot traffic on Portage and Main being brought up again, it reminds me of a fairly bold redesign for Oxford Circus in London.. This video has a pretty good visualization of the past and present model.. Seems like a possible scenario that could be adapted to Portage and Main?

I had to laugh when I thought of that concept here in Winnipeg. Although, it is a brilliant idea, a computer simulated run is much different than how some Winnipegers would act. For example, take a look at how many pedestrians J-walk on Graham between Fort and Garry, with nearly someone always getting hit because they are running between buses. Now, imagine those same J-walkers with this design at Portage and Main.......

Whenever I see designs like this and people proposing it for Portage and Main I look at the number of lanes at the scenario and the number of lanes entering at Portage and Main...

Oxford Circus -- 7 lanes in. Portage and Main 17 lanes in. Something tells me this won't work.

I kind of agree with the j-walking.. but one of the original plans for redeveloping portage and main if I am not mistaken was "release gates" timed to keep pedestrians back. But if we had a scatter crossing at portage and main, combined with the timer lights (which I have noticed has significant reduced ill-timed j-walking), and possible those "release gates", I think that would be a fantastic combo for portage and main personally. (Though I think the gates would look ugly). But Having the scatter walk reduced j-walking in the cities I have been to with it. Plus since all traffic is stopped when pedestrians are on the street, there is less of a chance of accidents.

I think the traffic counts are significantly higher here as well. That video states 2,000 vehicles per hr or 48,000 over 24 hrs. From the city of WPG traffic counts page (http://www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/PDF/Transportation/Traffic-Flow-Map-2012.pdf)for 24 hr periods - Main St south into the intersection (49,200), Portage Ave eastbound (36,600), Portage Ave westbound (16,900) and Main St northbound (50,000)
