In fact I find it very strange that the city of Ottawa has not created a site/portal with weekly or periodic updates. In fact the www.ottawalightrail.com site has not changed a bit since that presentation was uploaded in december/january. Very disappointing. I think webcams at the tunnel entrances and train yards depot would be a very nice touch.
I agree. For such a massive project, I find it very strange that the city has not set something up for construction updates (like they did with Lansdowne). I find myself constantly scouring the internet for news. The link jeremy_haak provided a few posts down was great (Thanks!).

Ottawa’s Recommended Light Rail Station Names

Ottawa’s new light rail train will begin operating in 2018. Construction is already underway, and detailed plans are being drawn up for stations and vehicles.

To keep the construction schedule on track, the names of each of the stations along the train line need to be decided over the next few months. This will allow design work to begin on several aspects of the system – such as the train control system, signs at the stations, the electronic customer information systems, the wayfinding systems, the signalling system, and the operating procedures.
What goes into a name?

Above all, the system has to be simple and easy to use. The recommended names have been developed following established principles and best practices from transit systems across the country.

Names reflect meaningful geographic and navigational information about travel and location.
Names must be easily understood in both French and English.
Names must be easy to pronounce and easy to use in both written and spoken forms.
Names should be distinct from each other and from other locations in the city.

Affected Stations:

Tunney's Pasture: A modification of the current name, Tunney’s Pasture, was proposed and is no longer recommended based on the outcome of the public engagement. The name is recommended to remain as it currently is: Tunney’s Pasture.

Pimisi: A new name, replacing LeBreton, and recognising the traditional land of the Algonquin people. A separate process took place with the Algonquins of Ontario to find a new name for LeBreton.

Lyon: New station under Queen Street at Kent. Previously referred to as Downtown West.

Parliament/Parlement: New station under Queen Street at O’Connor, near Parliament Hill. Previously referred to as Downtown East.

Rideau: (Secondary Wayfinding Reference: ByWard Market) New underground station at Rideau Street.

uOttawa: A new name, replacing the current name of Campus Station, to avoid confusion with other university, college, and hospital campuses in Ottawa.

Tremblay: (Secondary Wayfinding Reference: VIA Rail) A new name, replacing the current name of Train Station, to avoid confusion with the trains that will run through all stations on the Confederation Line.

LeBreton gone from Ottawa LRT route, station name to be Pimisi

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Sun

First posted: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 06:34 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 07:07 PM EDT

OC Transpo recommends sticking with Tremblay as a Confederation Line LRT station name and calling the LeBreton stop “Pimisi” station, based on consultations with the Algonquins of Ontario.

Transpo has also trashed plans to shorten the Tunney’s Pasture station name to Tunney’s, especially since the apostrophe is a problem for the French translation.

Lyon is recommended to replace Kent as a station name and aside from some punctuation changes, all other station names won’t change much from the previous draft.

So, from west to east, here are the 13 staff-endorsed LRT station names: Tunney’s Pasture, Bayview, Pimisi, Lyon, Parliament, Rideau, uOttawa, Lees, Hurdman, Tremblay, St-Laurent, Cyrville and Blair.

Transpo is recommending additional wayfinding references for Tremblay and Rideau that could be displayed in the next-stop announcement system, They are VIA Rail and Byward Market, respectively.

Transpo held a three-week consultation in July and collected ideas for alternate station names before filtering out the ones that wouldn’t work.

“Submissions that were not within the scope included those that may be considered offensive or humorous,” Transpo GM John Manconi writes in a report published Wednesday.

The plan always involved giving the existing LeBreton station an Algonquin theme since it’s near the culturally important Victoria Island and Chaudiere Falls.

Pimisi means eel in the Algonquin language and it’s sacred to the people, Manconi tells the commission in his report.

“Pimisi is the prayer carrier of the waters, travelling far through salt water and fresh and, according to Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge, over wetlands,” Manconi writes.

“The American Eel of the Ottawa River is referred to as Kichisippi Pimisi, Kichisippi meaning “big river” and it is the original name given to the Ottawa River by the Algonquins and Pimisi being the Algonquin name for eel.”

Management has also settled on a paint scheme for the outside of the trains.

They told manufacturer Alstom the design must include a maple leaf, Transpo and city logos, a swoosh and a minimum colour palette that includes red, white and grey.

Manconi says white is the dominant colour because it’s easier to maintain in the 30-year maintenance agreement with the Rideau Transit Group.

“The overall effect is a natural progression of the existing transit service. The paint scheme achieves a fine balance of existing values and identity, with a new and significant transformation into a modern service,” Manconi writes.

The transit commission will make the final call on station names and the paint scheme during a meeting next Thursday.

Can anyone explain how "Pimsi" fits in with any of the above criteria? WTF! Rename Dominion Kitchissipi, at least that makes sense. Or maybe rename Baseline "Algonquin". Leave Lebreton Flats as is or rename it Booth. Pimsi! More like Pansy!!!

Tunney's should have been changed for Holland. I'm happy with Lyon; it carries more distinction than "Kent" IMO. Parliament is 3 blocks north of the O'Connor station, people will ask "where the f*** is the damn Parliament"! The rest I'm fine with.

Oh, and the new train design is the worst rendition I have seen. What the f*** are those arches!? Bring back this design, please!

Or this one;

Jackassery I say! Pure f*** Jackassery!!!

Pimisi? WTF?

OC Transpo even violated it's own #1 guideline in coming up with this name:
"Names reflect meaningful geographic and navigational information about travel and location."

I don't care that a separate process took place with the Algonquins of Ontario to find a new name for LeBreton, if the outcome isn't related geographically to the immediate area and understandable by the vast majority of transit users.

I strongly prefer the earlier proposed solution to rename Dominion Station to Kitchissippi, which is Algonquin for the Ottawa River, and which is also geographically relevant to the immediate area surrounding the station (Kitchissippi Ward).

Leave LeBreton Station as it is!

I for one will wright a letter to these morons and demand it be renamed Le Breton or Booth (although I'm sure they are sick and tired of hearing from me). I won't even complain about the other stations.

Update: screw it, it's not worth it; I'm sick of wasting my time writing to these jack asses!

Why do we need to put flags everywhere? The maple leaf... again...*sigh*... The original design was a 1000 times better.

I do believe that the Maple Leaf should be featured on the train, but having it on the end of "OC Transpo" or something similar to the O-Train would have sufficed. Even having it at the back of the train would have looked a little less touristy ride. The proposed design is overkill and "quétaine" (but not as "quétaine" as the weird ass arches).

Ways to add the Maple Leaf to the old designs, do this;

Or even this (minus the advertisement);

Lyon: New station under Queen Street at Kent. Previously referred to as Downtown West.

How did this fall through the cracks???
If it's closer to a street other than Lyon, why call it Lyon?

It's actually under Lyon. I don't know why they keep saying Kent. There is one entrance on Queen at Lyon and the other mid-block integrated in the Podium (or PdV D).

They wanted to call it Kent, but Lyon is more accurate.

Every time I see a rendering of the trains they look different.

Has the specific nose styling and paint job been decided on yet?

They should have had an online vote for the train design like in Montreal. Same with the stations, including Le Breton.

What I don't get is the problem with the apostrophe in Tunney's. Who cares. Place d'Orléans is Place d'Orléans, not Orlean's Place. This whole two names thing should be avoided. Call it O'Connor not Parliament/Parlement. What's next, Bayview/Vue de la baie? Westboro/Arrondissement ouest? Lincoln Field's/Champ de Lincoln? Bayshore/Bord de la baie? so on and so forth.

IMO all the names are good with the clear exception of Pimisi and Tunney's Pasture.

Pimisi clearly breaks the guidelines in several ways but most notably is they've managed (wasn't expecting this...) to make it difficult or at least uncomfortable to pronounce in both English AND French.

As for Tunney's Pasture, not easy to pronounce in French and when I think of a pasture, I think of manure (don't ask why) ...
This is only made worse by the fact that this is the end line name and needs to be displayed across the trains and referred to more often than other stations.

On the other hand, I really do like Lyon, Blair, and Bayview as station names.

That's my two cents from an outsiders point of view.

looks like Toronto isn't the only city in the province venerable to idiotic station naming.

(See: Black Creek Pioneer Village Station, and Vaughan Metropolitian Centre, compared to what they should have been, Steeles West and Vaughan Centre)

when is tunnelling set to begin? IIRC, Ottawa won't be using tunnel borers, but rather will be using old fashioned drilling and blasting to get through?

There has to be a better way to acknowledge the Algonquins than to call Lebreton station "Pisimi". Call the current O-Train line the Algonquin Line or call the station Lebreton and give it a secondary reference that's important to the Algonquins ("Pisimi"). I wonder if the city made this deal with the Algonquins in response to some sort of threat. About the exterior train designs, it looks bland. Both of these recommendations are embarrassing.

It has already started (sort of) at both portals (U of O and near Pansy station). They are doing the prep work to support the dirt while they dig. Next summer they will start work on the (rough) mid point with a shaft in a parking lot on Queen at Kent, owned by Brookfield's; they also own Place de Ville which will have its underground shopping concourse directly connected to Lyon Station. With that, they will officially be digging in four directions (two portals and both sides from the central shaft).
