The mountain behind Downtown in that photo is 3286 meter tall active stratovolcano Mount Baker in Washington state. Distance from this vantage point to the mountain top is impressive 120 kilometres with bird's fly!

The effect is probably brought on by the lens. In reality, mt. Baker doesn't appear so close. In fact some days you can't see it at all.

That is correct and you can cheat reality with a long focal length lens. However that doesn't go to say Mount Baker isn't a majestic backdrop for Vancouver on a beautiful day from several vantage points.

Ew no. Residential buildings look way better 9 times out of ten.

^ Sorry, I think Vancouver could do with a little less sea-green glass cylinders. The Vancouver residential buildings, 9 times out of 10 are so monotonous (either a concrete block from the '60s or '70s, or some contemporary cookie cutter glass box from the '90s to now). It's Vancouver's office buildings that really stick out (like in most cities). Look at Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal...some of the nicest high-rises are office buildings (The Bow, Bankers Hall, Manitoba Hydro, Canwest Place, Scotia Plaza, Toronto Dominion Centre, Place Ville-Marie, 1000 Gauchetiere).

I have never come across a description of Vancouver as being "Canada's Manhattan." For Toronto, especially recently, I have quite a bit.

The Vancouver comparison does make sense though, given the downtown's density, located on an almost-island

No way, Commercial towers are far superior IMO. Towers like Shangri-La are pretty damn nice though.

On a clear day it's still pretty massive, I was surprised to find it was almost half way to Seattle when I first saw it.

Seattle has a similar effect with Mt Raineer (which is about 4000' taller), it's visible on a clear day, but the shots of it in the skyline use a pretty strong lens. I saw Raineer from the 70th floor of the Columbia Center and man was it impressive! kinda looks like it's floating.

I have photos taken from my old apartment in New Westminster with Mount Baker looming pretty impressively over Surrey's skyline.

I have heard Toronto being called Canada's chicago, and have heard numerous times, many of which on live TV broadcasts, for Canucks and Lions games even, as being referred to the Manhattan of Canada. Toronto has major density, but I think looking at it Vancouver is much more like Manhattan than Toronto because of the points you made. Both are amazing cities though, so props to both.
