What I was trying to get at was that it seems this city has a hard thinking outside the box. No, I don't want 50 storey towers strewn about the exchange just for the sake of development. But I do think if it fits (like the pump station development), then go ahead. But don't start demolishing everything just to throw up some building because it's tall. The thing that's makes the exchange great is the character, not the fact there are tall buildings. Put the tall buildings between Portage and Broadway, where they should be going.

So the former TD tower might become RBC tower?

Interesting. RBC also has the naming right for the WCC too, correct?

Correctamundo. And there is still the RBC building across Portage from the 201 tower.

This proposal exists because of the economics related to the redevelopment of this site; which is being redeveloped in the first place for a myriad of reasons.

I'd take this proposal over the building being demolished and turned into yet another parking lot any day.

That doesn't mean there aren't problems, inlp89, with the development. There are things being taken away and there may be better solutions on paper. I also understand why its important to not look at it just as a "wow pretty high rise" and forget the things it may not be good for, in that area overall.

But that area could certainly use a development of this calibre. The positives that come with it are potentially excellent; density is increased, the surrounding restaurants have more people to draw business from, this could even increase demand for a grocery store if there isn't one planned to be part of this proposal, and it potentially saves a historic building among other things.

There are negatives too, but I don't think one should dismiss the potential the building could bring either. Both sides need to be weighed, and I think there is merit to both ends of a debate, though I do personally feel this type of proposal is a forward thinking one overall.

But first this proposal would need to be approved. Right now, its just a proposal and could just as quickly disappear as it appeared.

I understand that the height is necessary to make this economically feasible. I haven't heard that if this doesn't go through they will demolish the pump-house either but that is a possibility. You make a good point "There are things being taken away and there may be better solutions on paper" you're right, this isn't perfect but us Peggers are good with compromise. Im not adamantly against this project, its just my opinion that its slightly too high, cosmetically. I would easily live with it, especially if the pump-house would be torn down.

I think the idea is that they're just selling the space for a corporate logo ... the tower's name is not changing (unless the plans have changed).

Correct Andy, The current owners of 201 Portage, have sold (RBC) the rights to display thier corporate logo on the building as advertising. The amount to advertise,( I believe it is Shaw, who are the current owners of the bldg.) was undisclosed.

201 Portage is owned by Creswin. RBC Dominion Securities is a tenant with a few floors of space in the building..

Unless I'm mistaken, 201 Portage is owned by Creswin Properties (run by David Asper). Creswin was not involved in the bankruptcy/purchase by Shaw. Shaw bought Canwest (run by Leonard Asper).

It is owned by Creswin. Shaw has nothing to do with this branch of the Asper family empire.

From what I remember in the Free Press article about this, naming rights came with the lease RBC Dominion Securities took for the floors in the building.

Just the Global one as far as I can remember.

I believe he only signage change from Shaw to Global was at the baseball stadium.

I would have thought some sort of jazzy neon sign would work, in keeping with the theatre's heyday.

I don't like what was done to Donald - there is no longer anywhere to drop people off at the MTS Centre.
