What has the crowd's experience been of newer cars with seemingly good mileage for their performance / weight?

Reason I ask is, while my prior cars all could easily hit the rated efficiencies, my FX has never been able to really get close. Even when on the highway and pegging exactly at 110km/hr (with or without cruise control on a flat road), over the course of the trip it doesn't hit the expected gas mileage. When I look at the performance on the system computer, it is clear that any very mild touch on the gas whips the gas mileage way down. With that being said, it seems the gas mileage taped on the window in the show room is not the best indicator.

I asked the Inifiniti service consultant and he said I was getting what most customers get, adding that the numbers achieved in the testing loop are very hard to replicate. He also added the bit about being above sea level (which is valid, but not to the extent that I'm noting). Overall the answer was fluff.

To be honest, I didn't get my vehicle for mileage, and in the grand scheme of things, I'm not overly pre-occupied with this, but it does raise some general industry-level questions.
