Guys, is there anything beyond the normal booming Alberta happening in Edmonton? Why are there so many awesome proposals? Is it just the provincially good economy or is something big happening there I don't know about?

Few reasons...
- Economy is good
- Arena district proceeding.
- Some major city projects in the works and/or built (art gallery, museum, etc.)
- Revitalization we started 15 years ago is starting to (slowly) work.
- Competition appears to be getting stronger.
- We're just playing catch up.

Excellent. I'm happy for you guys. I wish we'd get a little more oomph for our boom. Lots going on, but little I can post in this thread for good "Wow!"s.

That's great! Is it retail on the first floor? If so, a definite win for a small, lovely city!

Yes it is. Theyre being marketed as live/work units.

Looks great to me. Excellent interaction with the street. Reminds me of a grander version of some of the buildings in Gimli, Manitoba.

Nice!

Here's a cool development poised for the Stadium/Banff Trail area of Calgary!

Council gets glimpse of Stadium Shopping Centre facelift plans

Quote:
Plans to revitalize a 1960s-era strip mall near McMahon Stadium will be in city council’s hands Monday.

Stadium Shopping Centre is poised for major changes, including a multi-storey, mega plaza earmarked for offices, retail, restaurants, medical offices and a hotel.

But the final plans have yet to be proposed, the developer says.

As someone who travels past this area on a daily basis, it can definitely use a facelift and more welcoming facilities. It already is a good mixed use area though. It already has a couple of office buildings, one of them is 8 - 10 stories tall and at least one other 4-storey one. There are many hotels and tons of restaurants too. Would definitely be a great boon to the area to see more development and smart development. There is currently a 6-storey hotel under construction(topped out) at the site.

A very neat project for Edmonton. I am likening it to L'Habitat

This project is proposed for Bellamy Hill in downtown Edmonton, and consists of 75 residential units.

The tower of the building is twisted and stepped to create a varied profile and to take advantage of the river views to the east. Units are clustered into 3-storey volumes, which give the tower an identifiable scale – similar to a house.

Individual units are designed around a three-seasons balcony that can be closed off from the exterior to extend usability during the spring and fall months.
South facing units are glazed to utilize passive solar heating with operable screens to control overheating. North facing stairs and corridors are glazed to take advantage of natural light, but are not heated and act as a thermal buffer between the outdoors and the heated individual units. Visibility of interior doors and corridors from the street will animate the building from the exterior.

i work at FMC and this strip mall is an old waste of space. anyone who works at FMC knows that options for food within walking distance are extremely limited. yes, there are food trucks once a week but i've heard that they are going to put a stop to that because the awful cafeteria is losing money because of it.

i will be very happy if this gets built.

should i be surprised that the residents of university heights in their million dollar bungalows don't want this to proceed? i guess not it seems par for the course.

there's a development proposed? that's great, but traffic, parking, traffic, parking, BLAH BLAH BLAH.

There were issues with the surrounding sidewalks being undermined during excavation. They closed them off and it's really hard to see what has been done on site as it is pretty much walled off.

TBH, I like the shorter version than the 11 or 12 storey one originally proposed. Less imposing, especially on that tiny little lot.

Ugh, MORE? So jealous.

I really like that Habitatty one. Not nuts about the blank sides, but the design is interesting enough that it's O.K. This would look REALLY good as part of a dense canyon of skyscrapers.
