Received a letter in the mail from Mosaic. They're proposing the development of 134 units in two 6 story condos at 516 West 50th Ave to 6709 Cambie St (6 lots in total). I recall those lots going for around 3 to 3.3M each. I'm generally satisfied with Mosaic's works, safe but still appealing. They have another condo under construction at 33rd Ave called Elizabeth.

If anyone wants to have a first look at the proposal they have a public information meeting at Langara College Room A218 from 5:00 to 7:00pm, Tuesday May 7.

The city of Vancouver has issued an RFP regarding district engery along the Cambie Corridor. Lots of interesting details in there and well worth the read. I just hope that we don't end up with a hodge podge of utility companies with rates all over the map. This is one area where I beleive a monopoly with standardized pricing regulated by the government would be acceptable.

So, from an electricity perspective, isn't BC Hydro putting the finishing touches on a new substation at the north end of Cambie?

I'm still not even sure what "district energy" is after skimming that RFP.

Isn't it a district energy regime that's screwed up the Olympic Village's operating costs?

I do believe that would be what they are referring to.

Also caused the energy bill for olympic village people to be absolutely massive when you end up having to pay for Hydro AND Enerpro with their admin fee that was generally larger than the utility usage fee.

It should just be a heat utility.

I assumed so, but the end of the RFP references MW (MegaWatt) requirements.

Doesn't the first page indicate the point?

1.2 "The City is interested in proposals for the implementation of neighbourhood energy systems incorporating technologies that will reduce carbon emissions associated with space heating and domestic hot water use (“Proposal”)." (page A-1)

I am confused about the confusion.

MegaWatt is a just measure of energy, heat being a form of engery can also be expressed in MWs. I'm happy to see more localized engery production and ultimately it should create a reliable network for everyone. I just hope they implement it properly. It would really — to live in a city where you are paying one price to heat your house and your neighbour across the road a different price because one utility picked the wrong technology and you're stuck w/o the option to switch.

Watts are a measure of power, which is the rate at which energy is transferred, used, or transformed. Energy is measured in joules, calories, watt-hours, and other units.

Or they could just support the building of the Site C dam.

I'm glad somebody reads these things.

Site C would be great. If provincial governments from all parties hadn't been raiding BC Hydro's surpluses for decades they'd have the cash on hand to make it happen.

Regarding these energy systems, I think the idea is to get more areas on board to lower the fixed costs of providing the service. Which would in turn lower the bills for the OV residents... so I'm told.

Pearons Dogwood Site (Cambie & 57th) display boards from June 2013 (next meeting September 2013)

http://pearsondogwood.vchnews.ca/

Poster boards from the link.
Strange how the "Core" concept has the most open space in the middle of the site.
Note the relocated South Slopes YMCA

That's a hippy-dippy presentation, even for Vancouver.

What's wrong with a normal street grid. Seriously, it looks needlessly complicated

I agree. I hate when large developments try and make their own messy street pattern instead of keeping with the city street grid.

Of the 3, Continuum makes the most sense to me with density clustered closer to Cambie, but I agree with the above comments about a normal street grid. Let's not turn Vancouver into Burnaby/Surrey with these ridiculous large scale monsters.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing, also I don't think there is a single image without people in wheel chairs. There must be some sort of horrible event soon to happen in this city that only those behind this presentation are aware of...

It's just the result of all of those terrible drivers in Metro Vancouver...
