There's more to a city than a skyline. What impresses me more is the vibe and energy it gives off. Nothing worse than a big skyline that's dead on the streets. That's where it's at as far as I'm concerned.

You just described downtown Dallas, at least as it was when I visited there in 2006.

Most US cities are dead downtown with a few exceptions. It can get very eery.

no, its inappropriate really to compare calgary to toronto. if you were to actually put the skylines side by side, toronto is much bigger and has many more taller buildings...even if calgary does have a few quite tall buildings, the volume just isn't there. Toronto, of course, is also a much bigger and older city. At this point in time, its really no comparison. Even more so with street life..... Unfortunately, Calgary's downtown area just feels very empty outside of office hours compared to Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.....and I would suggest ....even Ottawa.

I've noticed a serious change in the DT core the last 5 years or so. It used to be true that there was no one there outside business hours but to say that now is simply false. Go down Stephen Ave any night of the week and you'll see lots of people on patios, walking around going to the Unicorn etc. with projects like Waterfront in Eau Claire, Le Germaine on 9th and the future Telus Sky residents in the core are growing substantially.

In terms of size you're right though. Calgary's a quarter the size of TO and it obviously shows.

Yes, some some of the streets in Calgary's CBD can feel that way.

That's a stellar shot of Montreal! It can be kinda tricky to get all the major buildings together in one frame. The city looks splendid at night as well.
