D&G Landscaping secures Lansdowne’s urban park contract

OTTAWA — D&G Landscaping will build the urban park at Lansdowne, Mayor Jim Watson announced Tuesday.

After a prequalification process, four contractors received a final tendering package and had to submit detailed bids. D&G Landscaping was ultimately chosen by the City of Ottawa’s chief procurement officer to make sure it conformed to the city’s purchasing bylaw.

D&G Landscaping has previously worked on such projects as the landscaping of the Canadian War Museum, the Bank Street reconstruction from Highway 417 to Holmwood Avenue and the Wellington West streetscaping. Working on the urban park at Lansdowne is a great honour, said Greg Clunie, the company’s president.

Construction of the urban park is expected to begin in late July; the installation of underground utilities for the park and interlock pavers around the Aberdeen Pavilion as well as the construction of the shuttle bus loop are all expected to be completed this summer. Although some areas of the park will be complete for Lansdowne stadium’s opening in 2014, the final features are not expected to be finished until the summer of 2015.

Greely firm wins $16M Lansdowne contract

Ottawa firm D&G Landscaping has beat out three other qualified bidders to win the right to build the urban park that’s part of the City of Ottawa’s Lansdowne Park redevelopment project.

The Greely-based company will receive $16.28 million for its contribution to the project, which will include installing underground utilities and building a shuttle bus loop.

D&G submitted the lowest bid among the four companies who qualified, according to the City of Ottawa’s media relations department. That beat out Carillion Canada Inc., Doran Contractors Ltd. and the Ottawa Greenbelt Construction Co.

Elsewhere on the Glebe property, Frank Clair Stadium is currently being renovated and in some places rebuilt.

Local developer Minto is constructing new condo towers at the site while Trinity Development Group is getting ready to add close to 400,000 square feet of retail to the space. However news about one of the tenant’s exit from the movie industry has left one of the largest components of that space up in the air.

The firm is set to begin construction later this month, with a lot of the work will be done by spring 2014. D&G’s work is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2015, according to a City of Ottawa news release.

They must have downscaled quite a bit. Since that would be negative publicity, the City likely won't tell us. I guess we won't know until the park portion is completed.

Hard to tell as it difficult to find the actual tender documents, I did find one article that indicated these elements were included in the tender that D&G won:

Elements in the new urban park include: • A children's play area with a state-of-the art play and climbing structure, a rubberized surface and a beginners' skateboard park • A water feature including one of five art pieces, called 'The Beacon', a metal sculpture that uses water to mimic the ebb and flow of local rivers; this water will be re-used for irrigation in the park • A refrigerated ice rink, which can be converted for curling and used as basketball courts in the summer • The Great Lawn, an open green space about the same size as Parliament Hill's front lawn, with walking paths, seating areas and event spaces • Small and large stages for events, concerts and entertainment • Refurbished greenspace around the Aberdeen Pavilion including an extensive seating court • A heritage orchard and civic gardens • Permanent farmers' market space between the Aberdeen Pavilion and relocated Horticulture Building - See more at: http://www.noodls.com/view/2FA99CE6DA95968509CB8FA1F3FD43CE445BCD12#sthash.Jv3411g8.dpuf

Was not a pond not in the plan--and an outdoor screen at the side of the Aberdeen? If so, I guess these are two elements that were scrapped.

Hey--if the city really expected the bids for the park to come in as high as 25 million, and D&G will do it for 16.28 ----perhaps the city can move the 9 million to the Arts Court redevelopment and make up for the money they were hoping the feds would give them?

I don't know if it qualifies as a pond, but the beacon feature is in water.

As for screens, I think that was on one of the losing bids. If I recall correctly, the only screen-like structure will be "breaks" in the incline from the front lawn to the stadium (I think that's what that grey L-shaped structure is in the image below).

It is being said that the new Hamilton stadium being built on the old Ivor Wynne site is going to be named Tim Horton's Field. It may be announced later today.
I wonder when the LPP will come up with a stadium sponsor?

I see that this new stadium will hold 22,500 with expansion to 40000 for special events. Not to much different than at Lansdowne.

Also Hamilton's McMaster University has a 6000 seat stadium named Ron Joyce Stadium. Joyce was Tim Horton's partner in founding the donut empire.
Hamilton is definitely Timtown.

I still expect uOttawa to sell naming rights to its field. Right now it is just Gee-Gees Field, but there are no name signs up , pending sale of the rights.

Minto have released pricing and floor plans for the townhouses and penthouse at Lansdowne. I'm not impressed with the townhouses. they are basically shoe boxes, long and narrow with windows only at one end.

I'm getting pretty stoked about this project. I'm looking forward to seeing the Redblacks play and maybe we can get some decent soccer games too. We can at last rejoin the world of cities that have a functional inner-city stadium.

I would love to see outdoor concerts here too! Paul McCartney would be more fun here than at Canadian Tire Centre.

The more I see of this going up, the more anxious I am to see this place buzzing. It'll be nice to have an open park there too. It'd be a neat place for free outdoor movie nights (using those inflatable screens) or something ... when games/concerts aren't on, that is. I'm definitely excited to finally see the Fury FC in action. On a related topic, will there also be a women's Fury FC team? (just curious since there's a Fury Women's team and we are holding the Women's FIFA world cup here)

The Ottawa Fury women have been playing for years. They are a very successful semipro women's club.

Lansdowne litigant’s legal fees paid off anonymously

OTTAWA — An anonymous donor has paid off thousands of dollars in costs racked up by John Martin through his legal actions attempting to stop the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park, the city’s chief lawyer told city councillors in a memo Thursday.

Martin, a Glebe resident who had his own smaller-scale concept for renovating the fairground, tried to get the courts to stop the city’s sole-sourced deal with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group but lost at every stage. Along the way, a series of judges ordered him to pay chunks of the city’s legal bills, a measure typically used to keep people from filing frivolous or quixotic lawsuits.

By the end, after the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear Martin’s arguments, he owed $12,655.58 and showed no sign of paying it, city solicitor Rick O’Connor’s memo said.

“However, I can advise that the City has been provided with payment of the full amount of the outstanding legal costs owing by Mr. Martin. This payment was received from a benefactor on behalf of Mr. Martin. This individual has advised that they wish to remain anonymous,” he wrote. “In light of this payment, Legal Services now considers the matter to be closed.”

Martin’s case was separate from the one pursued by the Friends of Lansdowne Park. He waited until after the Friends gave up their legal challenges before filing his own, a decision the Ontario Divisional Court ruled was an abuse of the legal process.

So I've heard. It would be one thing to pay FOL's fees, since they were the more legit group, fighting for a fair process as opposed to a deadbeat looking for his moment in the sun and a quick buck.
