Downtown Partnership director calls it quits

Terry Scaddan announces retirement after 14 years as executive director

After 14 years building and driving development in Saskatoon’s city centre, the executive director of the Downtown Partnership is retiring at the end of September.

“I think it's time and it's good for me and the organization,” Terry Scaddan said. “It’s time to get some new ideas and new blood, we have a relatively new board and I think it's a positive move to go to a new executive director.”

Scaddan said there was a street level vacancy between 10 and 12 per cent when he took over in 1999. Today that number has shrunk to under two per cent. Scaddan also oversaw the redevelopment of Second Avenue, bringing in Galaxy Cinemas and moving towards angle parking. But he said he can’t take credit for everything.

“We've had a succession of really strong volunteer boards of directors and the heart of any organization like this is that you have an involved and caring board that does their homework and stays interested and are involved in what's happening,” Scaddan said.

A new condominium project for low to moderate income families is being launched in the new Evergreen neighbourhood in Saskatoon Monday. Aria Condominiums will feature housing options for 66 entry-level homeowners running anywhere from $268,000 to $369,000.

Maltman and her husband, Tom, own the section of 20th Street starting just west of Idylwyld Drive to Avenue B (excluding Fabric Fantasy). It was the Maltmans who bought the Barry Hotel and then tore it down.

“It was really a social decision. (My husband and I) never had any big plans to be involved. But when we heard that it was basically going to become what it already had been, we stepped in,” said Maltman. “You can see a real trend, and it started with three things: You look at Garden Architecture, Curtis Olson and Carrie Catherine with the Two Twenty Collective, and us taking down the Barry Hotel…. It’s all really created a surge this area. People coming down here are really pioneers. There are all sorts of interesting places that are really creating a vibe that I am so excited about.”

The now-demolished Barry Hotel wasn’t the only old building on the street that drew attention. Maltman is thrilled with the move of Tap Communications into the Adilman building. She said the next tenants will be local business owners with fresh new ideas.

City of Saskatoon charts growth to one million people

Urban growth will expand north, reaching Martensville and Warman, as Saskatoon’s population balloons to 1.2 million people over the next 60 years, according to the city’s new growth strategy.

The strategy released Wednesday charts a path that will see the communities surrounding Saskatoon become more urbanized with highrise apartments and public transit as Saskatoon’s population is projected to grow four fold.

Kinsmen Park construction delayed after City of Saskatoon rejects lone bid

Construction on the first phase of the new Kinsmen Park has been delayed by approximately one year after the City of Saskatoon retendered the project.

The tender for phase one of the project closed in May and construction was originally supposed to being this month. But after receiving only one construction bid – which was “significantly over the project budget,” the city said in a news release – the projected is being retendered.

Saskatoon eyes rural areas for growth

City could reach 1 million population in 50 years

The City of Saskatoon unveiled a proposed 50-year growth plan that could lead to an urban area that encompasses large portions of its rural neighbours, including Warman and Martensville.

According to Saskatoon's city manger, Murray Totland, the region's population could reach one million by 2063.

In the shorter term, Saskatoon expects 450,000 people by around 2032.

Totland noted Wednesday that the city grew by 10,000 people in 2012.

Saskatoon community strongly supports Gordie Howe Bowl upgrades

The Saskatoon athletics community says they’re in full support of upgrades to Gordie Howe Bowl.

Last month the Friends of the Bowl foundation, the non-profit set up to spearhead the work to Gordie Howe Bowl, surveyed close to 700 people in Saskatoon in an attempt to gauge public perception of the facility. The results show strong support for the bowl.

“The Friends of the Bowl are extremely encouraged by these results and we will be moving forward on this project,” said Bryan Kosteroski, chair of the foundation.

“When asked how important it is for Saskatoon to upgrade the bowl, 84 per cent agreed it is important; 89 per cent agree it’s important that the city invest in these facilities and 91 per cent agree it’s good for Saskatoon.”

Now the foundation will embark on a capital fundraising project, as the upgrades for Gordie Howe Bowl fall north of $10 million. These upgrades, in Kosteroski’s mind, are long overdue. [...]

Saskatoon grew by 10,000 people in 2012 alone. So, by 2015, Saskatoon's CMA should have easily surpassed the 300K mark.

Question now is...how long to 400K?

The 50-year growth plan unveiled earlier this week would see Saskatoon expanding beyond the rural municipality of Corman Park to include Martensville, Warman and Osler.

Sheryl Spence, the mayor of Warman, said there could be some positives, but she has some questions about that plan.

"Warman is over 100 years old, and the things that we have done in Warman are sacred to us and important to us," she said.

"We wouldn't want to lose that by just becoming another part of the city."

Until a partnership is formed, Saskatoon wants limits on development in the area.

Could a bus cut down on bedroom community commute?

On the 18-kilometre stretch of highway between Martensville and Saskatoon, a steady of wave of commuters and truck traffic heads south.

It's morning rush hour, and at the Tim Hortons drive-thru on the edge of Martensville, cars snake around the parking lot, their drivers fuelling up for the drive to work in the city.

"I don't find the traffic horrible, but give it two more years," says Nathan Meade, sitting at the wheel of his van.

"It's already getting bad enough."

Like countless people, Meade lives in Martensville but works in Saskatoon. He's part of the daily exodus that clogs intersections and highways heading into the city.

Over the past six years, Martensville's population has grown 55 per cent to 7,716. An estimated 70 per cent of those people commute to Saskatoon daily. With the population projected to ballon to more than 70,000 in the next 50 years, the rush hour commute is only going to get worse. Saskatoon city officials are looking at a long-range plan to cut down on the singledriver traffic.

Sprawl carries big future cost

Commuters who get frustrated by the heavy traffic between Saskatoon and Martensville should be aware they haven't seen anything yet.

With no plans for a regional transit system and only halfbaked plans for a regional transportation system, the people now crowding into to Martensville - 70 per cent of whom commute daily to Saskatoon - have no choice but to buy one or more vehicles to make it to work and shopping.

Once those vehicles are bought, there is little likelihood a belatedly introduced transit or carpooling system will convince them to park their cars in favour of a much longer, slower and inconvenient means of commuting. The two cities also are likely to find that trying to commandeer already crowded highway lanes for high-occupancy vehicles and transit buses will be difficult to sell to a population that has become accustomed to a lifestyle of commuting alone.
