They were required to screen the first two levels of parking on the side by the City Council/Zoning Review Board. Hardly. That site is within 4 blocks of the BeltLine, a MARTA station, the streetcar and one of the busiest, most vibrant nightlife districts in the city. Not to mention how quickly that neighborhood is growing. Storage is such a waste there.

Public storage would be fine if they'd take a little more time and effort to actually design the facility in a nice way. Maybe a brick building with fake windows to look like an office/apt building with retail at the bottom. Design it to where customers can load/unload their things in/out of storage in the back while still having it look like a regular building with retail. Is that so hard? I'm sure this company could care less about anything but making money. They don't care about giving back to the neighborhood or the city. They're just looking to make money so in a way I understand, it's business. But I do wish the city would have stepped in to implore them to redesign and incorporate some retail. Oh well... At least it's not a Wal-Mart, lol.

I forgot to mention...

The storage building on Briarcliff in front of the Kroger is atutally a very nice looking brick building with windows. If something like there were built up to the street with retail, that'd be awesome. Okay, enough with my rant...

Interesting!

The business chronicle only reported that they were told to address several issues at the DRC review this week.

Regarding the JLB project on the AT&T site : They presented early concepts of the project which will be 8 stories plus at least 3 levels of parking with 290-320 units.

They also mentioned that Crescent Howell Mill is about to start construction.

Great point. There's no reason storage buildings have to be ugly. There's a place out in Dunwoody that's not half bad. Pull that up to the street and you'd have a fairly nice addition to DeKalb Ave.

There's an apartment building immediately north of the lot, as well as some single family residential. And a park a couple blocks away. Another apartment building a few blocks east on Dekalb. Obviously people do want to live there. Storage is incredibly short-sighted, sadly.

i'll level with you: i thought the building was a corny looking office building. i had no idea it was self-storage. if they were to put retail on the bottom level it would be completely disguised.

however, i do agree that self-storage is short sighted. if it weren't for the self-storage facility on piedmont rd, piedmont park could easily extend to fill the whole block. hopefully there will eventually be pressure to remove that facility.

I agree - the whole area around the storage along Piedmont Rd (including the clothing store, dry cleaners and restaurant) could be better served as part of the park! Heck, I'd even like the park to eat up the whole corner of Monroe and Piedmont all the way down to Dutch Valley. Don't think it will happen in my lifetime but you never know.

I wonder whether it's something that could be addressed in the permitting process? I bet that if somebody tried to put a concrete bunker or a metal shed at the corner of Peachtree Dunwoody and Mt. Vernon the local authorities would come down on them like a ton of bricks.

I've only seen it mentioned in articles about Crescent Terminus or other projects but there is a summary of the project on the Preston Partnership website.

Is this the one that's supposed to happen at the SW corner of Howell Mill and 10th? If so, it will plug a really ugly gap in there and also afford some excellent views as it sits on top of a hill.
