Is this now the FINAL look of Questplex:

Questplex seeks pledges: $5.5 million in donations needed for library, children's museum

By the end of next year, Montgomery will be home to one of the first technology centers of its kind in the state and possibly the country — the Questplex Global Education and Discovery Center.

After several years in the planning, the $22.5 million renovation of the building at One Court Square, which will include the new downtown City-County Public Library and the Children’s Museum of Alabama, will go out to bid in early July.
Mayor Todd Strange said he expects construction to start in September or October. The project will take about 18 months to complete for a late 2014 or early 2015 opening.

hmmm.... I like that it looks a little like City Hall, but it doesn't really fit in with the lower Dexter look (not that the existing eyesore does, either).

I'll need to see it for real to make up my mind.

new life for empty building

Gangnam Bar and Grill is slated to open in late July in the former location of Darryl’s and Hooters ...

Owner Juhyun Seo said the restaurant will serve Korean fusion and Asian selections in the large restaurant site that includes a bar, patio and upstairs seating.

The new business will create 15 to 20 new jobs, Seo said, adding that he plans to use the patio as a serving area.

The facility seats 150 to 160 people, and Seo plans to have several televisions in the building a construction crew is now busy renovating...

Gangnam is an affluent area in Seoul, South Korean. Think Beverly Hills, CA.

Todd Strange announced he’s hiring Mac McLeod as director of retail and commercial development and Anita Archie as executive assistant to the mayor.

McLeod is president and chief executive officer of The Colonial Company. He said he will “eventually” step down as president of the company, but will start working for the city as a contract employee on Aug. 1 for $130,000 per year. He will oversee development department staff.

Archie will start July 22 for a salary of $130,000. She will take over some of former Deputy Mayor Jeff Downes’ duties, including overseeing planning, risk management, the city clerk’s office and the City Council.

I just visited your city for the first time this last week. Was there visiting my girlfriends family and friends (possibility of moving). We walked along the river and did a quick car tour of downtown. Later in the trip we went to see one of my GF's best friends and her guy perform at the outdoor bar of the Renaissance. I really enjoyed it.

Some notes: SO MANY TREES! They never end! Had the tastiest peach in my life from some farmers market off the interstate near Clanton. Growing up in the Great Plains, we have a much different definition of "the country"; the country on the plains was seemingly endless farmland with small towns interspersed whereas it seemed like the country there was seemingly endless houses on plots of land to small to be farms. Made it down to Mobile and had some "blackened gator tail" which tasted good, but the shrimp was much better. Also, SO MANY TREES!!

Glad you enjoyed your visit to our state! The progress being made in downtown MGM has been tremendous, but the is much that is left to do.

Clanton is definitely the center of Alabama's peach industry, a great choice.

EDIT: there* I tried to correct a typo, but my iPhone didn't allow it.

Fleet Feet Sports, a nationally-known running store, will open ... mid- to late September in the Westminster Shopping Center on Carter Hill Road. It will be the third Fleet Feet Sports in Alabama, joining the Huntsville and Birmingham locations. Each store is committed to growing the local running and walking communities and offer educational resources and training opportunities.

Avery Ainsworth will own and operate the Montgomery store...“I want it as a place where people want to come and hang out and not have a lot of traffic... being in Mid-Town was the place to be.”

Dexter Avenue Still Priority for Montgomery

LINK

The City of Montgomery announced plans to update Dexter Avenue with new stores and museums years ago.

But where does the project stand today?

These empty sidewalks used to be packed with shoppers all along Dexter Avenue.

"Back in the 60's, I used to come down here. I was kind of small boy. All these buildings like ATL Green, JJ Newberry's," said Montgomery resident J.C. Holloway

But now things are very different. But the city is looking to 2015 as a goal to completely change the area.

"In 2015, there are two major anniversaries coming up. The 60th anniversary of the Rosa Parks, and the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March. We want all of that to be finished with construction," said Mayor Todd Strange.

We'll soon see construction start on the new Questplex children's museum and library of the future, as well as the demolition of buildings around the Kress building. But one man I spoke with hopes to see the old buildings preserved.

"Me personally, being an older gentleman here, I'd like to see some of the older buildings renovated or updated rather than torn down and having a newer structure put in front of it," said Charles Dean, who's lived in Montgomery for 49 years.

Local developer Mike Watson now owns the Kress building. Mayor Strange says he doesn't expect Watson to build a wright brothers museum. He has something else in mind.

"The last conversation I had with Mike, he was looking for some performance area, maybe have a museum element in there. I know he wants to have a lounge. He's done quite well with his entertainment activities," said Mayor Strange.

The most immediate change you'll probably see is the repaving of Dexter all the way up to the Capitol building. That should start in the next month or two.

Some private construction is already under way. One developer is already building new loft apartments next to the City Drug store.

Glad to see this. When this facility went under, it was bad for the entire area of town.

City Officials Say Several Projects Downtown Behind Schedule

Montgomery city officials say several projects downtown are behind schedule.

The city purchased the old State House Inn last October for $850,000 and plans on selling the lot once the building is demolished.

City officials say the building will not be torn down until the end of the year, because they found asbestos in the building.

Once the lot is cleared, the winner of the city's food truck competition will move into the empty lot. It was supposed to be up and running in May, but city officials say the owners are still working on their truck.

"There has been a delay. So much has happened with the alley. That was such a fast moving train. Really exciting and with everything else, there has to be a lull before you get back in gear," says Melanie Golson, Department of Development Outreach Coordinator.

In September of 2011, Mayor Todd Strange announced his plans of recruiting a grocery store to downtown. He even offered a 1.75 percent sales tax credit that would be paid out to the store after it has been open for a year.

As of now, no grocery store has committed.

The bowl game will certainly speed development of the Statehouse Inn site.
