I'm thinking there's going to be a need for a diamond interchange on the Perimeter somewhere between Henderson and Lag with all the development going on. Limited access for a good stretch there with only residential routes to get to Henderson and/or Lag. Just my thoughts.
MIT would never allow another access onto the Perimeter between Henderson and Lag (it's only about 3 km). They don't want people using it as a city arterial or expressway. That's the point.

I attended the open house, there is nothing to show yet, no site plan but the first phase, the larger format retailer would be on the western edge of the site (along Gateway).

MIT will be working hard over the next few years at closing off all minor access points to the Perimeter Hwy, Trans-Canada and 59 north. Two weeks ago they closed off one gravel access to the Perimeter just north of the Trans-Canada at Navin Rd.

So soon, it's only been about 47 years! Maybe they can remove the curbs as well which are about the only one's I've ever seen on a high speed roadway anywhere in North America.

So the point of the Perimeter is what then? Just for people who live outside of Winnipeg to bypass the city? So all those people in Transcona who use it to get to work everyday are in the wrong?

The point of residential streets in the city is for residents. Not through traffic from a new retail node.

I don't know, am I really that far off? I thought the Perimeter was an expressway (freeway, whatever you want to call it) to move whatever traffic it needs to.

PS no hasty or rude tone from me here, just questions!

Heard something on Grandma's radio station (listening to Blue Bomber pre-game show) today about the announcement of a new residential highrise, where? what? and how high?

It is a bit overwhelming in Toronto -- I hated driving on it myself when I used to drive. And I'll admit that I'd never heard of this "merge lane" thing when I came out to Toronto either. However, traffic in Toronto tends to be at a standstill much of the time anyway, so the idea that you'd be accelerating on to the Gardiner or 401 can be a bit of a theoretical proposition. You could easily walk up the York Street ramp on to the Gardiner faster than you typically get to drive it.

I know this is all word of mouth, but's that what I've been told..
It was in the newspaper that the 2nd segment will be done but not soon. The city wants to get its money out of the paving job that they just did last year on that segment. It will also be 3 lanes according to the concept plans (a parking lane and one north and one south). http://www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/Major...eetTwinning/PDF/PanetMolson-BasePlan.pdf

Yeah, they were saying at the open house it'll be 8-10 years.

I just found it funny the plan was always to be 4 lanes to Grassie. Now they say there's not enough traffic for four lanes the whole way. Then in the very next sentence he says there's going to be a ton of people moving into the new development just down the street. At a dead end as well. With highrise residential. That's all.

Ok, access problem solved right here...

Forget that stupid idea of active transport bridge over 101. Make a diamond interchange at Gateway/101. Now, people from ESP can safely cross over 101 to the new mall, and people from NK can get into ESP easily. Exiting off 101 to Gatway would be possible going both east bound or west bound. Then have side walks on both sides, and maybe even throw in a bike lane on one side (for the AT folks.)

Get the developer to share some of the interchange costs, put that 16mil for the AT bridge into it, and — some money from the 1% PST hike that was shoved down our throats a few days ago.

Dude, I just solved the access problem.

The city councilor for NK was on CJOB last week, and he was saying that he wants the developer of this shopping center to put money into his ward as there is going to be traffic problems with all the Winnipeg residents heading out to ESP to shop.

Well, it would just be north NK residence coming into ESP. EK has Kildonan Place closer to them.

If you live in North NK, like I do, it's kind of a toss up between going to Garden City, or Kildonan Place. Both are decently far drives for me.

I usually just end up taking the Perimeter to McPhillips whenever I want to go to Walmart, Lag/Regent is a nightmare.

I wonder if the hope is that all the traffic from the Schreimer's redevelopment site heads through the roundabout and goes Grassie/ Lag / Chief Peguis and not further down Molson to Concordia and points south.

MIT would argue that the Perimeter is a provincial highway, not a City expressway. No one is "in the wrong" for using it, but it's definitely meant as a bypass, which is why the Province is adamant about limiting and restricting access.

Too much local access reduces its efficiency as a safe, fast route to move goods, services and people. It's not there to get people from East St. Paul to a new retail development faster. The busiest sections of the Perimeter are both sections over the Red (101 and 100). They would never add new access around those bridges without removing another nearby (e.g. Waverley for Kenaston). Gateway "interchange" would never happen. Maybe a flyover though...
