I don't want to see something like the Jefferson Parish building, but I'm not a fan of buildings with odd extending angles. Sure it makes the building unique, but it feels out of place compared to other surrounding structures. The Jefferson Parish isn't bad, it's just uninteresting.

I thought it was interesting the impact the new buildings have on our skyline from my viewpoint.

Thought you all would be interested in the news about the buildings planned for the corner of 400 S/ West Temple- a short segment was aired on KUTV this morning about the proposed "Air 7 Center" to include an office building, restaurant, and "high end night club."

I bet the Air Center would look really cool lite up at night. I really like it. With the new 10 story courthouse across the street and now Air Center that looks to be 6 stories ( Ron in the video said 8 stories, not sure where the other two floors are? ) this is going to expand downtown a bit more south. Can't wait to see this go up.

I too am wondering a little about the rendering and what Ron Bird said; 6 vs 8 vs city ordinance saying it has to be at least 100'

That's pretty awesome news! I really hope it gets built as shown in the rendering. Btw, an 8 story building can easily be 100' tall. Office floors these days usually range from 12' to 15' in height. Plus, the mechanical penthouse, and any extra top architectural expression.

My guess is that those trees on the 3rd floor aren't going to be less than 12 ft. So I would bet that there are actually 2 floors in that set back portion of the building, and if you look closely it appears that the top floor may also be set back from the glass facade.

After the initial excitement, I am now a little skeptical. We've seen the SugarHole project and the recent DA project knock down buildings and then leave a desolated block due to financing issues. These developers seem young, and I'm skeptical that they have their financing in place. They might just knock those buildings down, and then leave us with another vacant lot in downtown. What can we do to make sure the city doesn't allow them to demolish until they have secured complete financing? I'ld rather have them leave the existing buildings, despite their obscurity, then have them knocked down just to have another vacant lot in downtown.

I like it. But I'm with Orlando. Until it's actually built, I'm going to be skeptical of a project like this. It's not the first time a decent project appeared to be on its way ... only to go nowhere.

I remember there was a proposed 'Salt City Plaza' a few years ago that looked pretty all right. It was a mix of 11, 7, 6 and 5 story buildings and was supposed to be a nice mixed-use development over by Orchard Street off 200 West (550 S) and it never came to fruition ... right? I mean, maybe it was developed and I've been totally oblivious, but I don't think so.

That was from 2007 - from what I can tell, nothing came of it.

So, we have a history of some major, or at least substantial projects, never getting anywhere.

Hopefully this doesn't join the list. I'm excited to see it happen. I hope it happens. It looks cool.

I don't see why it wouldn't be built. It seems too good to be true because someone's actually doing something different and cool, but I don't think it's overly ambitious... 8 floors with a night club and restaurant. Definitely a cool concept, but nothing unrealistic.

I think the skepticism arises from the fact that we've seen proposals like this in the past go absolutely nowhere. It's not that it can't be built ... it's whether it will, in fact, be built.

Many of the proposals that died were realistic options for the city - nothing extreme by any measure ... but for whatever reason, they just never panned out. Go look at the very first Salt Lake City projects thread and you'll see a whole host of projects that weren't extravagant or unrealistc that absolutely never panned out.

In fact, sadly, I'd wager a project stands a better chance of never being developed than actually being developed in its original state. So, we're definitely working against the odds here. But that doesn't mean it won't be developed ... just that I don't see the need to get excited over proposals anymore. I've been burned a lot in the past.

To be fair, a lot of those proposals from around 2007 didn't see the light of day due to the crappy economy. Now with a much better economy hopefully we have a better shot at getting some of these cool developments.
As for the DA office, I blame the county who don't seem to know how to budget their money well.
