City planting thousands of trees to create a leafier future

The city is planting up to 50,000 trees this year as part of a plan to double the portion of Edmonton covered by urban forest to 20 per cent within the next decade.

"It's a wonderful goal for us and it's priceless," says Jeannette Wheeler, the city's principal of forestry. "The urban forest affects all of us. It helps so many things, with storm-water, extending the life of hard infrastructure and improving the overall well-being of living in a city. Can you put a price tag on that?"

There are about 13 million trees in Edmonton. About 310,000 of them are publicly owned, with an estimated value of $1.2 billion...

Excellent to hear. I do hope we get a good % of coniferous to ensure some colour in winter.

Exactly, no comparison. Pike Market with over a 100 years in history, with a wicked view of the Puget sound, and a culture unlike any other N.American market. If anything put it in Rossdale with some sort of history and view of the river. Putting it off of Stony Plain Rd makes no sense at all.

I think it's great that the stakeholders in that area are trying to find ways to spruce up that downtrodden area of SPR. Nothing wrong with lofty goals

I remember six or seven years ago when we were starting to ramp up the AB ave initiative and the ridicule we received from the general public. Seems similar to what's happening here (as I read through the twitter posts and unfortunately recognize a bunch of C2E'ers being dirtbags as usual)

Saying "it should be in Rossdale" does nothing to add the the conversation, in fact it detracts from it. Sure the Pike Place reference was a little off. But this is hardly the first time someone in Edmonton has drawn a wild and crazy parallel between somewhere else and here (lookin' square at you, kid!)

Cold and 240 you both have valid points, but using Pikes Place as an example is wrong. SPR should be looking at Alberta Ave's play book. I see it more in line with Kensington Market. An Rossdale GS could look more like Sydneys power plant redevelopment.

As someone who drive through the SPR area quite often it has a long way to go just to get out of the Pawnshop rut it is now in.

I went shopping at the pawnshops a while back - bad selection. Mostly just cheque cashing and gold businesses it seems now. Most weren't even open at 8 pm on a weekday!

Great pics! Looks like The Pearl really is shaping up to be a game-changer in Edmonton... Hope we see a whole series of new Pearl-like towers in the city...

I just discovered that ProCura is advertising for Central Tower at Century Park already. This is a weird decision for a rental building considering that they haven't even broke ground at this point...

I think you're reading it wrong. There are lots of rentals in the existing four buildings. The little blip at the end is just for info on the new tower (which may or may not come to fruition) The rest of the ad is for the existing rentals in the complex. Nothing to get excited about.

If I'm reading it wrong, it's only because of how they built the ad. Specifically in the paper version where they have that description of Central Tower and then have the pricing immediately below it with no mention of the current buildings.

^ Well then call them if you're so concerned about it. But I'll tell you one thing, they don't set rental rates on apartments that are 3+ years away from being occupied, and there is no sign that Procura is moving forward with that tower in the immediate future, and if they do, it'll likely be to build & sell it. So I would summize that those ads for apartments are for existing suites, and the little blurb about the new tower is just advertizing fluff.. 'cause developers & advertizers never stretch the truth, do they ?
