Empire Theatres Sold to Cineplex

I wonder what this will mean for the 8-plexes at Crystal Palace and Wheeler Park?

I have noticed over the last couple of months that Empire has really been scaling back their staff on non-weekend nights. The box office has been closed and half the concessions have been closed too during those nights. I guess this probably meant something given this news......

On the bright side, maybe Cineplex will consider an IMAX somewhere in the city, maybe in association with a new events centre.......

The news even made Deadline Hollywood's newsfeed as I just linked in the Freddy thread.

It should be good news all in all. Too bad it didn't happen a year or two ago, before Crystal Palace was redone; maybe they would have been able to put an Imax in there instead.

Two developments on St George:

Acme Electric (in the strip mall at Botsford) closed down a couple of months ago. A new shop that sells 'handmade furniture' (I assume from local artisans) is currently setting up their operation there.

The restaurant beside Red Satay closed down a couple of months ago as well, and is being replaced by a whole-foods restaurant/store. If it's not open yet, it should be very soon -- they've been working at it for a few weeks and it looks nice.

I've passed by both of these places a number of times and I unfortunately keep forgetting their names. I'll post them if I manage to actually remember them for once.

The market on St George I wrote about is called Tropictran.

They have a website under development: http://tropictran.com/

I was wrong about it being furniture; they seem to be specializing in crafts, jewellery and home decor & accessories. Looks like an interesting store which I hope succeeds.

Restaurant news:

- Mary Brown's will open in Plaza 1909 by mid August.
- Mai's Asian Restaurant will open in Plaza 1909 in the fall
- Pita Pit has announced where their second and third locations in the metro area will be, 40 Champlain Street and 394 Elmwood Drive.

- The 40 Champlain Street address would tend to imply that this Pita Pit location will be going into the proposed "phase two" of the PlazaCorp Champlain Street Plaza.
- The 394 Elmwood Drive address would appear to correspond to the old "Price Chopper" location. I wonder what might be afoot here? Is this building going to be demolished for a new plaza?

Further, the company has plans for two more locations (on Harrisville Blvd and in Riverview), making a grand total of five Pita Pit locations in greater Moncton.

The Harrisville location is interesting. PlazaCorp owns land out that way too; where the Kent and Sobeys are going. Maybe this is the first inkling of who one of the tenants in this development will be.......

That puts Pita Pit in 2 different future PlazaCorp development. They must have a great lease agreement with them! I wonder when the Harrisville one is supposed to start?

From what I found out the crane is for some installation of some new light poles. Walmart has no expansion plans for that location. The tire lube express closed last week in the store to accommodate the inner expansion. store is ripped apart pretty good in there. Mcdonalds is closed I will assume they are renovating as well? looks like they are rebuilding the bulk heads where the signage will go.

Wow! St-George street really is becoming Moncton's cultural avenue. I'm loving it!

Too bad Pita Pit can't find a location downtown on Main st.

That's helpful, thanks bigrivernb.

New lighting for the parking lot at Champlain Place makes sense.

I didn't think the actual footprint of the Champlain Place Wal-Mart was going to change, so they are just going to sacrifice the tire & lube express for the expansion then.

Most of the structural steel is now up for the expansion of the Moncton West Wal-Mart. It probably will be ready at about the same time as the Target at the Northwest Centre opens in the late fall......

If that is the destiny for St George Street, then that's a pretty good one! It won't rival Main Street, but I can definitely see St George becoming a cultural touchstone for the downtown, a neighbourhood commercial street and the natural northern border of the downtown core. With ongoing infill between Main & St George, the commercial and cultural future of this street should be good.

There is no question they could find a downtown location (if they wanted to), it's just that for some reason, they are choosing not to. There is some competition downtown already, like Wrapsters, maybe that's discouraging them......

Seems like WalMart is moving the McD's out of their stores. The one in the Woodstock Walmart closed last year as well (just wasn't worth it, esp with the full store almost literally next door)

looks like the reason Mcdonalds is closed is the store has no running water inside. a source from Mcdonalds said they are going to renovate that location some time in the near future. however for now without water they can not operate.

Also in the last couple days construction has started on a new 3 unit retail strip on west main. It's beside McDonald's...and the sign shows 2/3 units are pre-leased

Speaking of St-George street, something else is opening up soon at this location between Dominion & High st. The house is going through some renovations and a business industrial door has been installed as the main entrance.

If you ever drive by during the evenings, you'll easily notice 5 well lite chandeliers hanging in the front porches.

I didn't notice any "Opening Soon" signs, but I'm guessing maybe a restaurant.

Again, I'm really enjoying seeing all these cool little shops opening on St-George street.

Champlain Place:
Bizou is moving to the old Telus location.
Fruits & Passion is moving next to Peoples.
So now we have the old F&P location and the old Bizou up for grabs... well sorta, I'm sure some tenant is just waiting to come in.
