ER.....Probably the Hotel Cecil.

A lot of strange things have happened up on that roof. Just ask Elisa Lam about it.

I might be staying there later next month and maybe not. My sister thinks it not a good idea for me to stay at the Cecil. It looks very noirish

The building that was once a Jazz club, became a Japanese theater that showed samurai movies (Toyo and later Kokusai theater) is now a performing arts theater.

Funny you should post this now. In the past two months, I've gone ahead and unearthed practically everything there is to know about this building and its history. In fact, I'll be giving a free slideshow lecture about it tomorrow (Sunday) in downtown L.A.

A tidbit: one of the land's first owners was Mrs. Genevieve Paddleford, America's most notorious "international adventuress and love pirate" for nearly 40 years. Hers is quite a story.

Fascinating stuff!

AlvaroLegido, my address was 935 1/2 Hancock Ave. West Hollywood. You'll see that there are three bungalows
and I lived in the rear of the first bungalow. (they were built in 1946)

It looks like the building housing Germains has been replaced by another monstrosity. But you have the right address for Germains. To be certain, I found some detailing on the side windows of the building next door, which still stands, minus the earlier fire escape. The matching areas are circled in red.

...then I noticed 'Snafu Coffee Shop' several lines below Germain's in the directory and remembered this photograph I posted here last week.

I was dumbfounded to see that the old Snafu building is still with us. I had assumed the old photo showed it during demolition, but it is definitely the same place. The two small buildings were simply remodeled into one storefront. For proof, look at the top left edge of the roof, and how it aligns with the brickwork on its neighbor. Identical in both shots.

This was done from atop the Biltmore - and skipping over trees of Pershing Square there is the Hill St. Boos Bros. and a portion of the Metropolitan/Paramount Theater building to the cafeteria's right side--

Thanks for the follow-up. The Encore Theater appears in the '73 directory at 5308 Melrose . . . XXX--3545. According to Cinema treasures, it started out in the '40s as the "Melvan" and later became a TV sound stage and warehouse before being revamped and renamed the Encore (1963), before another rechristening as the Continental ('80s) and ending up as a place exclusive for the parking of cars.
