Mack has a good write-up about the incident here:
http://blog.mastermaq.ca/2013/06/28/machete-something-edmonton/

He makes some really good points about why we're maybe a bit sensitive about it.

I'm a bit bewildered by the explanation there. I think it was largely a lacking content issue in the article, missing some very choice words that would have focused the attention onto the supposed newspaper's editorial stance instead of seeming to suggest that it was the writer's opinion. There is also the great stress that many Albertans that Edmonton is sharing that is setting us off.

^ Well put. Perhaps it was just too soon to try to make light of any part of the situation.

Cabinet minister says ‘no’ to Rossdale power plant demolition

Quote:
Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk said Friday she has no intention of removing provincial historic designation so the city can demolish the former Rossdale power plant.

City council members, including Mayor Stephen Mandel, have balked at the estimated $70 million it will cost to stabilize the huge structure and upgrade it for tenants, but Klimchuk said they should work out a plan with other groups.

“Respecting the challenges the City of Edmonton has with financing, it’s a really good opportunity to let the community lead the charge and see what they come up with,” she said.

“I’m not prepared to take off that historical designation … We take this very seriously.”
Quote:
Edmonton could look at London’s famed Tate Modern gallery as one example of a successfully redeveloped former generating station, Klimchuk said.

“They need to work and listen to some alternatives, and not just say ‘take the designation off.’ I see that as an easy solution,” she said.

“It would be a phased-in project that I would see … I just don’t want to rush into anything.”

Replacing the roof and stabilizing the walls to keep the building standing for a few years while long-term plans are created carries an estimated price of $4 million to $7 million, depending what’s done.

Klimchuk called this “a reasonable approach,” saying there might be a small amount of provincial money available.

“To me, it’s not like putting $80 million out right now. It’s doing it in steps and thinking about uses (for the building) that could really support a landmark for Edmonton and Alberta.”

I think steel does offer a notable speed advantage. It doesn't take that long to blow insulation onto beams, trusses and Q deck.

I don't like it because of the resonation you get through it and the obvious soundproofing advatages of concrete.

I believe steel is also a more carbon intensive building material

^^ Glad they're keeping the designation.. now what to do with it. The city seems to have bitten off a little more than it can chew as of late with all the major projects proposed.

On the other hand maybe we're sensitive about because it was so far off base? Maybe it's one of those things that shouldn't be condoned because finding them perpetuates them?

I have read the rationalizations and reread the statement a number of times since this morning. I find it as offensive this evening as when I first read it.

Change "Edmonton" to "reserves", change it to "n-word neighborhoods", change it to Moslem or kike town and ask if it would then be acceptable. Even if it was "just" the satirical joke or play on words it is being downplayed as, that doesn't make it any less offensive.

And things that are offensive deserved to be called out for it.

It would be difficult to repurpose something like that. Too bad the rendering of the downtown Cultural Centre doesn't extend east past 97 St; would be interesting to incorporate the ex-remand into that somehow (i.e. downtown dorms for U of A students? Just kidding!!!)

I was wondering if someone can give me some information about a developer.

I am thinking about purchasing a unit in the Symphony condo development on 106st and 97 ave. Does anyone have any thoughts on Graham Construction? Also, the electrical is being done by Muth and the mechanical by Jetro or Petrin. Does Wasnea and Graham Construction have a good reputation? If I buy a unit in this building am I taking a big risk?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

You mean Jetco I think... I'd be more concerned about the types of systems going in than the installer. Those guys can knock in equipment as good as anyone (they'e no Priority Mech tough!) but what's been spec'd is what's really important

The developer in this case is virtually unknown

Analyst touts public market area
Says Stony Plain Road would be rejuvenated by new businesses

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

Rachel Pambrun and Candice O'Sullivan are dream clients for the business association on gritty Stony Plain Road.

Listening to the robotic voice of their GPS, the friends navigated there from Windermere and Terwillegar last week, attracted by the lure of the unknown at the new Blue Jar Antique Mall...
