Perhaps, we should name each station after a different Conservative Prime Minister. Where should Stephen Harper station be located?

Funny, how Kent station is located at Lyon Street on the map.
Stephen Harper Station... how about Hurdman, the bland wasteland?

But in all seriousness, my final choice for names. For the heck of it, I will name the completed lines (2031ish once it extends to the burbs);

System : metro

Lines;

N/S : MacDonald-Cartier - Yellow Line - # 97

Kanata-Orleans : Confederation - Red - # 96

Baseline-Orleans : Algonquin - Green - # 95

Gatineau : Outaouais - Blue - # 67

Stations;

-Tunney's
-Bayview
-LeBreton (I can't think of any aboriginal name that can represent the area)
-Lyon (you know, because it's under Lyon )
-O'Connor (three blocks south of Parliament hill is not considered Parliament)
-Rideau
-UOttawa
-Lees
-Hurdman
-Tremblay
-St-Laurent
-Cyrville
-Balir

While we are at it, change the name of the following stations;

-Westboro : Anthole
-Dominion : Westboro
-Baseline : Algonquin (name all stations at post secondary institutions after these)

- Confederation : Heron (We have a Confederation Line, no need for a Confederation Station, especialy not wasted on such a dismal area).

Final notes; please do not include the words "light" "rail" or "transit" in the name of the system. No advertisement ON trains, ever. Never seen it on any system anywhere else. Advetisement in trains, in stations and maybe the tunnel advertising they do in Montreal? never seen it, but people seem to approve. Trains red and white, includes OC Transpo and Maple Leaf. Once multiple lines go through the tunnel, paint coloured stripe on trains indicating line on which train travels (Confederation regular Red White colour, Green stripe on Algonquin Line, Yellow stripe on MC line, Blue stripe on Outaouais line).

I have lived briefly in Calgary before and have visited many times and they have advertising on the outside of some of their C-trains. I've seen where it's only 1 car with an ad and also where all 3 cars are for the same advertisement. I don't think it's a bad look especially considering you don't see it very often. But if it's only going to bring in 200k a year and could cause maintenance contract issues, I'd rather them go without it.

I personally dislike uOttawa as a station name, it's transit not the internet. It relies on specific capitalization, otherwise it is meaningless. It is also cryptic for visitors, and the station serves far more than just the university. Somerset East, Canal, Sandy Hill or Colonel By would have been better in my opinion

True, but the primary destination for that station is the University of Ottawa. Creating a bilingual name would be very cumbersome without the uOttawa format. That is definitely my preferred name (second choice: Sandy Hill-uOttawa).

I like changing Train to Tremblay, too vague for that name. Tremblay-VIA also works.

As for the western extension, I'd name them:

Westboro (per #2 below)
Dominion --> Highland Park (per #2 below)
Cleary --> McKellar (or McKellar Park, per #2 below, but two consecutive stations with "Park" may not be ideal)
New Orchard --> Woodroffe (per #4 below, no obvious community name, closest to Woodroffe Avenue)
Lincoln Fields (per #2 below)
Iris (per #4 below, not the best name, but no other obvious one)
Baseline --> Baseline-Algonquin (per #1 and #3 below, well known as Baseline, but should make Algonquin College more prominent, so appending is best IMO)

Priority order for naming IMO:

1) Important landmark in the area (i.e. major shopping mall, college/university, important point of interest like Parliament) - examples: St. Laurent, Carleton, uOttawa, Bayshore, etc.

2) Community name, if well known to the area - examples: Westboro, Hurdman, Lincoln Fields, etc. (Note: I propose changing some west end stations to that level)

3) Nearby major arterial road that sticks out - examples: Blair, Pinecrest, Baseline, etc.

4) If none of those are suitable, look for a minor arterial or collector road that is fairly well known - examples: Lees, Iris, Tremblay, etc.

5) If still no suitable name, consider historical factors or poll the community for clear landmarks (cannot be politically motivated!)

Another consideration for LRT before implementation is whether or not food and beverages will be allowed to be consumed while on the trains.
Curious what your thoughts are. The first route development will have no impact to my transportation needs, so I'm indifferent at this point.
Just curious...

I don't see why one would have to eat on the train; do it before or after you get on. As for beverages, I guess it should be allowed.

On a different note, I would like a fare free zone between the three downtown subway stations. Maybe even stretch it between uOttawa and LeBreton. That would make for an excellent experience for tourists sleeping in the big hotels on Lyon heading to the Convention Centre or the Rideau-Market area. And I know that connection to the WEP is off the table for some reason, but such a landmark (as much as an office building gets in this city) which also houses the NCC info Centre should have a direct connection to the subway station running parallel.

You are allowed to eat on the Metro (Montreal) or the TTC (Toronto) so I don't see how Ottawa should be any different.

How about something suitable from Algonquin history: "Ishkode-odàbàn chìgàkwà sìbìng"... "The place where the wheeled people-mover emerges from the forest close to the river".

That should be easy to remember in no official languages!

Enough of this PC crap already.

I agree. However without food, such as bagels, donuts etc...will that not greatly limit the incentives of the types of vendors they hope to entice to hang their shingles in and near the stations?

I'm fine with most of it except the three below:

1-Lebreton (should stay lebreton, like everyone noted, nobody will call it if its name is weird/unpronouncable and unrelated to anything in the area).
2-Rideau (Shouldn't it say Rideau CENTER or have at least somethere relating to the ByWard market since it is one of the best/biggest neighbourhoords/tourist attraction in Ottawa? Maybe call it "Byward/Rideau"?
3-Tremblay (I rshould really be called "Trainyards" or "VIA train" or "Eastway Gardens" since it will include the pedestrian overpass to the field of dreams-er I mean that baseball field -__- Tremblay is a very small 2-way street with nothing important on it or about it...

1. Totally agree. Le Breton or maybe Booth. No aboriginal name suits the station. If we have to honour the indigenous people, rename Baseline Algonquin and maybe name one of the new Richmond Underground stations Kitchissippi. Or maybe name the Richmond Underground tunnel Kitchissippi.

2. I somewhat agree, but station names should just be one word/name or one thought. Especially Downtown. We look at the other 5 rapid transit systems in Canada and they have a combined 15 of 240 with multiple names. I think that Rideau best represents the area.

3. Trainyards works for me. Includes the retail, office buildings, VIA yards and is near the metro rail yards as well.

"Grand Trunk" would be an interesting name for the Train station, after the Grand Trunk Railroad on upon which much of the central Queensway was built over.

I saw that as I was scrolling down this page too. If the station will be at Lyon Street then they should call it Lyon or something, instead of Kent.

Tremblay should only be called Trainyards if there's an actual connection to the Trainyards development.

Currently there isn't and hopefully one will be built before the LRT is up and running.

Anyone else notice that the reason we're having trouble with the name for the rapid transit station at the railway station is because the railway station itself doesn't seem to have much of a name?

I think it would be unfortunate to not use the Lebreton name as it has been associated with that location since the founding of Bytown. It is a more historic name than any other with the exception of Rideau that dates to Champlain's exploration.

The railway station should be named 'VIA Station'. It is the landmark that most Ottawans associate with that location. I don't believe that the Trainyards development will be connected to the station, at least not at first. I think that is unfortunate but I suspect that VIA Rail has some say in a pedestrian connection that may pass through their station.

Given the TOD potential of the area around the station and across the hwy around the stadium, and given that VIA trains only show up a few times a day, I think in the future VIA passengers aren't going to make up the majority of the station's users, so naming it after VIA is not a good idea IMO.

'Tremblay' is a good choice. Other options could be 'Coventry' or 'Overbrook'.

I just thought of a solution to this problem:

Gréber Station.

It can be the name of both the railway station and the LRT station.

And the name itself is perfect in the sense that Jacques Gréber is largely responsible for the railway station being where it is, so it has a connection with history as well.
