Someone in the Orlando thread asked the same question. It's going to be a massive parking deck - just be prepared. Both equivalent Skyhouse towers in Atlanta came with parking decks that caused tons of controversy.

Random thought for the day...
It seems like every sector of our metro area is growing (and most at incredible rates). In the city proper UT is keeping up with Austin's growth in terms of construction. The only entity that hasn't been growing is "the state." Why has their been no growth in their presence (especially in the complex) to match not only Austin's boom but that of the entire state?

Good question. I'd say it's our currently elected state politicians. For instance, our governor just vetoed a couple of new state building that were set to rise in Austin.

There was a bill that gave Austin more say in how state lands in Austin is developed? And he signed this?

That is pretty shocking to me, and unexpected. Can any elaborate on it?

There was the groundbreaking ceremony recently. I haven't seen the site recently, but I would assume so.

When I read that the construction would be finished in 2016 I figured there was no way it would take them 3 years to finish a 6-story 123 foot building. Now I know the reason. If it starts in December that's basically 2014.

My friend who's going to UT Austin went to orientation and invited a few more friends and I to go and explore the city. Smaller than I expected, but really nice place. Love the hills and curves, great food. Very active in the SoCo area and downtown, but I was surprised at the number of homeless people there. The heat isn't as bad as it is in Houston and I plan to visit more often. :-)

Yes, the homeless people are a big problem. I know firsthand due to them squatting on and destroying property of my family off South Congress.

I have heard that it is due to policies the city implemented that a lot of homeless from other cities make their way here. Is that true? If so, it seems that the city needs to adjust its policies to help empower the homeless to find jobs rather than enable them to live their current lifestyle.

I'm not sure that's true, but if Austin has been labeled that way and has gained that stereotype then it certainly might be perpetuating something there. There are other factors at play. Austinites tend to be nice caring (giving) people. And then there's the climate thing. It's hot here, but as long as you don't run around like a headless chicken it won't kill you. It's not like you're going to freeze to death and we have little in the way of truly bad weather. And then there's the pedestrian friendliness factor. And less face it, most homeless are pedestrians. And we still have just the right amount of undeveloped lots in a few areas of the city that make perfect homeless camps.

Compared to other cities, Austin has very lenient laws regarding the homeless population. As well as a great collection of organizations working as resources for people trying to get back on their feet. That is a very attractive motive for the homeless and travelers. Also people in Austin tend to be very friendly and more accustomed to dealing with strange folks. A few years back Austin did try to implement a bulked up aggressive panhandling law, although I think it did not go through. Being the liberal center in a mostly conservative state as well as home to a large amount of state offices and non-profit organizations, there is more options in Austin than anywhere else in the state.

I work on East Riverside and homeless has been a big issue for years. However, within the last two years there has been a steep decline of problematic(on drugs) homeless folks.

Sat out on the lawn at palmer and watched all the cranes working on our city of progress. Quite the future we have in store.
