The nice thing about Banbury Cross is that it is local and in my opinion far better than Dunkin. Good instance where the local company is not just a rival but a leader. It's no sacrifice to go local.

The only reason I will probably go to Dunkin' Donuts is because it is on the TRAX line on my way to work at the University--this way I can bring in donuts for my employees at work every once in a while. Getting off at Trolley Station and walking to Banbury Cross would probably take 40 minutes round trip. Though I agree Banbury Cross is far superior.

That is a great location for Dunkin, no doubt. I think the City employees in the City and County Building will all be packing on a few lbs over the next few months. Mayor Becker better get 'em biking!

I drove by there about 7:30 last night and I was shocked. Why is it that people get so excited when a national chain or average donuts or average burgers IN n Out, opens its first location and they rush to be in line for hours to get a chance to be one of the first?

Are people just that excited to have another chain that doesn't differentiate us from any other city in the country?

I'm with you Jedi, I would much rather buy a donut from Banburry Cross, one because there donuts are amazing and two, because they are local.

It bothers me that the zoning allowed for the remodel to have a drive through in that location. I'm guessing it was because it was a technically a remodel rather than a tear down and rebuild.

I think there may be a conspiracy here. Mayor Becker loves biking and wants to expand bike lanes. The mayor pushes to get the Public Safety building built thereby concentrating the vast majority of the city employees at one location. Just by chance a Dunkin Donuts appears right next to the seat of concentrated power. Now the city employees will get fat on Dunkin. The mayor will announce an city fitness program and include funding to expand bike lanes. All the city rejoices as they rub their expanding mid-sections. Ergo, this is all just the secret machinations of our fitness conscious mayor.

With regard to the Marmalade Lofts, someone mentioned here that they are not facing the street. That is not accurate information. There are two rows of townhomes. One set will face east along 300 West and another set will face west onto an existing alleyway. There is an interior street that provides vehicle access to the garages. I think it is a pleasant design and that they will sell very quickly. It will be great to see a long vacant eyesore disappear.

One thing that has to be noted on RSL being downtown, is the owner of the block that the city was wanting to provide incentives for (600 - 700 S: Main - W Temple) wasn't willing to sell the property to the city for redevelopment. I guess holding thought that it would be better to have a couple of vacant car lots and other random things on that block, rather than provide instant customers for their two hotel properties.

While it sucks that it ended up being built in Sandy and there is still nothing being developed around it, it did wake the city up and the RDA is continually looking at buy properties that could be pooled together for a future stadium, wether that be MLB, NFL or NBA, 25 years down the road. Greg Miller mentioned in a press meeting yesterday, that although the just put 15 million into the new video screens they plan on making upgrades to ESA so that it will last another 25 years. He noted that when it was built, Larry intended it to be the home of the Jazz for 50 years.

I don't know... when I worked at the Heber Wells Building, that was my favorite BK to walk to... I'm gonna miss the over-microwaved 'food' items and the transient residential fights that took place there...

I'm just glad one of the popular new franchises to the region is actually establishing its first location in Salt Lake City. I tired of hearing about everything going to the suburbs - areas I don't really care to venture out to to try these popular brands. It seems it's almost always been like that (from the days when Krispy Kreme opened in Orem in 2000 to In-N-out and Popeyes more recently in other areas), so, good news all around.

Not that I really drink coffee...but, yeah.

Neumont University is having an open house for the Tribune Building Friday. It's from 10 a.m to noon, and apparently you're supposed to ask for Stacy Hughes in the main floor lobby if you go. Thought some people here might be interested.

A couple of updates from driving around downtown yesterday (sorry I didn't take pics) The building in the Moe's parking lot that I thought was going to be one story is up to two stories. If I'm not mistaken wood can go up to three stories, please correct me if I'm wrong, so maybe it will get up to 3.

The crane on the LaPorte project was in the up/working position yesterday so at least they are doing some sort of work.

Light wood framing can go taller than 3 stories. Much of the 4 to 6 story urban infill projects here in Portland are light wood framing. So, your news is a little encouraging. Though, I don't understand why they would build that next to the existing one story building if it is to be torn down. It makes me think that all they are going to do is renovate the existing 1 story building and maybe add a wood frame addition above. Lame. But, still better than before.

I did some digging on the Salt Lake City site, and found that this project is being called 360 World Atlas. It will be a 2 story office building.

Its getting more common to take wood higher up in seismic areas with newer strapping and anchoring testing. I was at a Structural Engineering Conference where they were showing a test video done by Simpson Strongtie for a 7 story wood framed building completely built on a shake table.

Thanks Jimmy; I'm going to try to make it. I'll be teaching a class down at BYU that morning; might be able to be back downtown by 11:56. As a former Tribune Building resident, I'd really love to see what they've done.

Current code is 4 stories if it is sprinkled. That is often built on a main floor of type 1 (concrete or block). There are some variations to this but that is basically the limit. However like everyone said things are changing and we may see taller buildings in wood, engineered wood, and wood/steel composites.

I don't know how many of you would be interested, but there have been several "Instawalks" in SLC lately. Basically, walking tours with your Smartphone, taking pictures and then Instagramming them, tweeting them, whatever. I think the Mayor's office sponsored 4 of them last Saturday in conjunction with the Farmer's Market; I don't think they're doing it every Saturday.

I haven't been able to do one yet, but I'm considering this one, coming up on July 9 in Sugarhouse: https://www.facebook.com/events/169406606563556/ The podcast I Am Salt Lake and Chris Holifield are sponsoring it. Both are good resources if you're into SLC. His program isn't all architecture and urban planning, but he does touch on that now and then.

Annnnyway. Just thought I'd let people know. Could be a fun thing to do when you're in the mood to explore the city.

SALT LAKE CITY — Preserving historic buildings and sites creates jobs and increases property values, according to a study released Monday by the Utah Heritage Foundation.

The study, conducted by Washington, D.C., real estate and economic development consulting firm PlaceEconomics, found that 7,313 jobs were created annually directly or indirectly by the heritage portion of Utah’s tourism industry. In addition, 4,969 total jobs were created between 1990 and 2012 using federal or state historic tax credits, according to the report.
