Just an FYI-- some people are coming in this afternoon to the office to talk about a project downtown. I know it involves an office building though I'm not exactly sure the size. This would be in and around West Temple and 400 South. If it's worth mentioning I will definitely share it.

The only thing that offends me on here is that it is the year 2013 and this forum still doesn't have a mobile optimized version :/

This photo shows the Neumont (former Trib) facade. You can see some of the material on the pallet in the foreground. To my unexpert eye it looked cast, but of substantial thickness and well emulating Red Butte Canyon rock. There were office furniture trucks out front this morning and interior glimpses look as if it is getting close to completion.

You may be right. It does appear cast. I saw it quickly, though the scaffolding, as I passed. I am ok with precast though especially at the quality and level of detail that this appears to be. At least it will look like it matches the upper portion of the building. It's better than what was there before this - but not as good as the original.

That's such a cop out. 'Modern buildings can't be attractive in the details because codes preclude it.' There is no aesthetic problem that a good architect can't tackle.

Wow the Grand is going to love that. They wanted that property but the Flower Patch wouldn't sell. This is probably what the Grand feared - that it would become even less appealing retail. And an EZ Pawn is just about as trashy as you can get. Too bad.

There is nothing about that design that resembles lofts. I'm tired of suburban developers re-branding their 🞵🞵🞵🞵 so it sells in an urban environment, even though there's nothing urban about it.

I remember that. It was a huge deal in the papers and eminant domain was being thrown around, etc. It was going to be the site of a 14-17 story tower, correct? What a shame.

Pawn Shops shouldn't be allowed in DT. State Street is so ghetto --nothing but pawn shops, tattoo parlors and used car lots.

Yes, that's quite depressing, Scraperdude. What a loss. The stadium itself in Sandy is an awesome thing. They recently hosted the world cup qualifier, and host huge events like that all the time. Not just soccer, but concerts and stuff. Of course, we all know that, I just think it's such a waste that those things are showcased in Sandy, which has a couple of cool things like the stadium, but on the whole, it really 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵. Such a loss for Salt Lake City, and Utah in general. I really don't understand how Salt Lake could be bullied and beaten by places like Sandy and Draper. The Aquarium is another real loss for the city.

As for the Marmalade lofts, they look pretty urban to me.

I don't ever recall hearing they had planned a 14-17 story tower there. Is there any link to this? I Just remember they wanted the hotel to take up the whole block and they had to readjust the footprint because the owner didn't sell the property. In fact, the south-site corner is the exact size of the area there Flower Patch building sits on, so, if they really wanted to build a tower there, they could have just built it on the corner of 600 S and State.

The "lofts" are designed to face a side yard and fence, not the street. There is no street engagement and they add nothing to the pedestrian experience. Not urban.

Utah's very first (one of 23 Utah locations planned) Dunkin Donuts opened Tuesday! It was a very crowded and busy day on the corner of 4th S and 2nd E.

Unfortunately the land was cheaper and Sandy was making a real push at that time to attract development like the stadium. I like having a MLS team and events like World Cup Qualifiers, but I am embarrassed that visitors from outside of Utah have to go to Sandy for their event. The area around the stadium is awful-pedestrian access 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 and it sits way back from the street. There are no quality restaurants or bars for before or after an event.

At least Sandy didn't lure the Broadway style theater away from SLC. Sandy seems to have cooled off on being so aggressive in competing with SLC.

The original plan (which I never saw renderings of, but read about extensively)(about a million years ago) was to have the main hotel essentially the way it is now, PLUS an "executive tower" on the corner. I know it was going to be taller than 10 stories, but the 14-17 number doesn't ring a bell. The sticking point with Flower Patch turned into an RDA funding issue (I thnik), which resulted in Holding/Grand America not getting the kickbacks they wanted, so they decided not to build the tower. It was more a taxes/funding issue than an actual space issue. You're right, they could have built on the block across the street. Eventually I think it came down to Holding throwing a fit.

At the time, I was angry at Flower Patch for standing their ground, because it would have meant one more tower, a little more density. That opinion evolved the more I learned about Holding and his evilness. But now it's sliding back, because EZ-PAWN??? Really???

I would gleefully bypass a dozen Dunkin Donuts to get to one Banbury Cross. I'd much rather have Banbury or Dunford or another local bakery than another chain.

Then again, I'd probably rather have a Dunkin on that corner downtown than a Burger King. If just for a change.
