Where are some new places to try for food in Saskatoon?

I'm in Saskatoon for work frequently, and last week made a stop at Saboroso for supper. Holy damn is that place deadly! I think I might have found my new favourite thing about Saskatoon. Living in Regina, I usually try to work Jerry's or Fudd's into my trips as well. But what other places are new and worth trying?

Also thought I should mention, I've given the Holiday Inn a bad rap because of it's U.S. State Pen look from the outside...and I don't take that back, but I stayed there last week and the inside is actually quite nice. It's a bit "over modern" which results in a kind of stale environment in the lobby, but the rooms are VERY nice..at least the one I had was. Co-worker said his was smaller, but still nice.

MoSo Conf was on Broadway Ave this year which was a treat to spend 3 days amongst.

Konga Cafe is my favourite place in the city. It is Jamaican and wonderful.

I would add Prairie Harvest Cafe to that list (great lunch spot, and deck + Puddle Jumper cider + food + hot sun = amazing), Las Palapas (their coconut shrimp is a Saskatoon institution, or should be), and Rook and Raven is a favourite too (although with summer weather, I enjoy places with the option to eat outdoors). I've heard good things about the Manhattan gastro pub off Primrose, but I haven't been yet.

[QUOTE=Chaps;6167962]Where are some new places to try for food in Saskatoon?

I love the pizza at Manhantan, the Nachos from La Bamba, and the combination of food and atmosphere on the roof of the Yard and Flagon. I finally got to try Bon Temps over the weekend and I was NOT disappointed. I will return!

Hey EarlyByrd, welcome back.

What is the specific problem you're having with posting photos?

Park over rails in plans

By Charles Hamilton, The StarPhoenix June 18, 2013

Quote:
A massive elevated park could eventually flow over the railroad tracks that cut through the city's north downtown as the city looks to create a new core neighbourhood to house upwards of 6,000 people in a mix of condos, apartments and townhouses.

The 13-acre "land bridge" park in the middle of the yet-to-be-built neighbourhood would connect residents living on either side of the CP Rail line and is surely the most striking feature of the north downtown plans, which were unveiled to city councillors at an executive meeting Monday.

"One of the problems (we) set out to solve was how to get across the CP rail line," said Jeanna South, the city's project manager for the North Downtown Master Plan.

"There is also a need for the green space."

But the 240-acre neighbourhood - bordered by First Avenue, Idylwyld Drive, 24th Street and 33rd Street - would be more than a park. It would also be a model for a new kind of urban living, housing a large population in a very small area.

That has one councillor worried that it could turn into a ghettoized housing project.

"Did we not learn anything from the projects in the United States?" Coun. Pat Lorje asked.

Lorje fears such a densely populated neighbourhood could be full of rental units and therefore disruptive to other nearby areas such as Caswell Hill and City Park.

But South reassured the committee that the new area, while dense, would be an attractive place for people to own and rent. She also said subsidized housing is not in the mandate.

"It won't be any one thing over any other. It will be a mix in order to create the most vibrant neighbourhood," South said. "We will be seen as a very desirable site."

Even though the neighbourhood is still at least 20 years away from completion, parking is still one of the major hurdles for planners.

^^^ God does Pat Lorje ever do anything but complain about stupid — anytime they discuss anything in council meetings? How she keeps getting elected is mind boggling.

Signs are up in the windows of the old Royal Bank on 2nd Ave (beside the Odeon) for the "Bell n' Whistle Bar and Bistro".

Construction fencing and trailers are now in place at the site of the Cineplex expansion on 2nd Ave.

No kidding. And I wonder what renters in her ward would think of her "ghetto" comments, given the perception some have of neighbourhoods in Ward 2. A healthy city neighbourhood is like a healthy ecosystem: diverse. That means lots of housing options including rental spaces, public spaces and utilities, and lots of activity and movement within.

A new found piece of Saskatoon heritage:
Someone dropped off this original print photo of my Great Grandfather (far right) in front of his store in downtown Saskatoon in 1906. It was a year before he founded Early's Farm and Garden Centre.

I believe it would have been within the area of the Midtown parking lot, where the original Early's grain elevator was (knocked down in 1982). Note the Salvation Army across the street.

The man who dropped the photo off left without the staff getting his name or being able to properly thank him. If anyone is aware of who it might be please message me! There are so few photos from back in the day...and this one is a gem!

ECHOES: Got it! I tried another browser and right clicked to copy the image address instead of using the url above. Thanks again!

I seem to recall people saying that Brooklyn-style density was the target for this area. Brooklyn as a whole has higher density than this area. I did a little digging and the area of North Center Chicago has a density of 5900 people/sq km. If you google pictures of North Center, some very nice examples of what we may be able to expect pop up. And like I said in my last post, the housing options seem diverse there.

Here's an example:

So basically I want her and anyone else who's complaining about squeezing more people in to remember that cities across the world have done it and continue to do it all the time and it seems to be working out well for them.

Glad you figured it out! That's a great picture and story.

Was there also an Early's warehouse in addition to the grain elevator on Idylwyld/Avenue A? From looking through historical photographs, it seems like Saskatoon lost a fair number of old warehouses between Idylwyld and 1st Ave when Midtown/Centennial/Idylwyld were built.

I wish more of those railroad-era relics were still around in that area.

The airport expansion project is slated to be completed in the fall of 2014. The airport will remain open during the construction period. When Phase 1 is completed, they will use that part of the terminal while completing Phase 2. Follow the Saskatoon and Regina Airport forum here

Do you mean the West side of the bridge where all the dirt is? If so, I don't know--they just seem to have made piles of dirt then moved it around and made new piles for the past few years...

I think that's where they are keeping the cells of contaminated soil prior to removal from the site. River Landing Phase II was once the site of a coal-fired power plant.

That property along the west side of the Idylwyld Bridge is zoned for high-density residential and retail development. It's slated to be sold off by the City in the next couple years.
