I wish I had never known Hamilton. It's too sad what they're doing to the place. The people there just don't know what they have, their urban ideal is Vaughn or Markham.

Demolition crews have moved into Gore Park in Hamilton:

That row of old buildings will be demolished and replaced with...nothing specific, at least not for about three years, if interests rates stay low.

The stone ones below are over 150 years old.

Incorrect, the stone facade buildings will remain.

Though they did just demolish their two old hospitals but I don't think any one on this forum would really know about that.

Demolitions from Sault Ste. Marie
St. Mary's Paper. Old stone buildings are to remain.

Building owned by Essar Steel Algoma soon to be demolished.

Old Northern Breweries to be demolished with sidewalks closed off and some heavy machinery at the site now.

That's a shame about the mill but don't even try to compete with the Hammer - we'll demolish any building, any time, any where.

Thunder Bay considered demolishing both of these in the past few months:

This was torn down last weekend:

Part of it collapsed in late June, and the city had no choice but to remove rest of the building.

The light brown brick building on the left in this photo is going to be demolished in a few weeks; the best way to describe what happened to its interior is, "it melted".

The first one is the Whalen Building, built 1913. It is currently about a third to half full, and most of it is being renovated for new tenants. During a report to council earlier this year, city administration claimed it would cost approximately 13 million to renovate the building for future tenants over 3 years, and they suggested that demolition would be an option, outlining the steps needed to remove its heritage designation and bring it down. Council seriously considered it.

The second is the Royal Edward Arms in Fort William (1928), the building is currently owned by the city of Thunder Bay, leased by the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board for social housing. The building is in a state of disrepair, with only one poorly functioning elevator, garbage and human waste (feces and urine) in the halls, and frequent fires inside the apartments and hallways. The TBDSSAB has decided that they will not renew their lease, and at the end of 2014, all remaining tenants will be evicted and the building will become the city's problem. City council has two options: Spend millions restoring the building, or demolish it. They're still working on figuring out what to do. Thunder Bay hasn't built new social housing units since 1991.

The last two, the Empire Hotel (1904) and Lyceum Theatre (1903) are owned by absentee landlords (the Empire, a number corporation in Ottawa; the Lyceum, a "collector" in California), both have severe water damage that has lead to partial collapse (the Empire had part of a wing collapse, the Lyceum has had parts of its second floor fall onto the first but the exterior is still stable—a pipe burst and wasn't detected for days). The city has been unable to get a hold of either one, and both properties owe tens of thousands in taxes. The Empire had been "scheduled for demolition" on and off since 2010, but the city never got around to it; the Lyceum is scheduled for demolition this summer and with the collapse of the Empire Hotel, the city will likely get on that very soon.

Our city council has directed administration to survey the city for dangerous abandoned buildings in similar situations with negligent land owners so that they can be demolished. A report should be tabled in the coming months.

Three abandoned buildings burned down in the central Fort William area this winter; two of them, houses, are still standing after more than 4 months. A small commercial block owned by a former city councillor was demolished within days of the fire. All three are considered arson but no arrest has been made.

Terrible. Sorry, Thunder Bay. When a city starts slipping down that invisible slope, arson is often viewed as the only way. Burn the f*cker down and collect the insurance. Sad.
