-That symbol/shield on top looks like the Salvation Army logo. Was Bell & Howell's logo as bad as that during this era?

I spotted a cool car in this ER photo. The middle car is a 1951 Mercury 4 door sedan. It was very popular with the 1950s custom car guys. This also helps to date the photos.

I think it's actually a 1950 Mercury, which would have hit the showrooms in Fall, 1949.


The book Fabulous Boulevard by Ralph Hancock was published in September, 1949.



The calendar in the back has the same pattern of days as November, 1949.



Any old TV experts out there who could date these Admirals?

Not to nit pick but the Merc. is a 1950. 1949 and 50 were about the same, the 51 had fins and a little different grille as in the ad. . Yes they are popular in 2 door, but because they are so popular 4 drs. have become acceptable. Some 4drs. have been customized to become 2drs.

Hello Hollywood Graham and I congratulate you! That car is a 1950. I should have looked a bit more closely at the grill and turn light chrome.



Here's some guys giving a re-do to a 1950 Merc. I assume this is the North Hollywood Kustom Car shop - Barris Industries.

I am happy to have been able to shed some light on this mystery. Subsequent to my post, Chris, my ex Santa Fe switchman buddy was discussing the wall with another mutual friend who has been working passenger trains out of LAUPT since the early days of Amtrak. He is currently a conductor on the Sunset.

Here is the text of his email to Chris: "That's not the same wall. It was moved back about a passenger. car length (approximately 70 feet - annotation by me) to accommodate the Busway. I have two (5&6) of the track numbers from the south end of the sheds that were cut off when tracks were shortened. The shed ends were laying on the ground, so _________."

Anyway, I have to get off my lazy butt and set up a photo site account so I can post photos of LA that I shot over the years. Any suggestions as to the easiest site to use?

I use imageshack Wig-Wag...of course there are many others. (most are free, unless you want additional space)

You might have noticed the thread has slowed down recently. We would extremely welcome any photographs you or your friends

ER, odd and misguided certainly does describe that cover! What were the boys down at the ad agency thinking? A post three martini lunch effort, perhaps?

I will certainly attempt to contribute some meaningful photos to the site. Indeed, I felt quite fortunate I was able to remember the aerials of LAUPT on page 4 and reference them for further use. One of the many wonderful things about the site is that the photo inventory continues to grow and paint expanding visual history of the city throughout the years.

I'm not an old tv expert but I own one of those Admirals! I was told, or saw a date on it, that mine is from 1949. It's bakelite - weighs a ton.

I met George Barris a few years ago and had him sign my 2005 Mustang GT. He is such a nice guy and gave me a tour of his shop. Some amazing stuff goes on in there!!

I wish I could go back in time and drive my Rambler in there and hand it over to him. One can dream right??
