If they are starting from scratch though, maybe they'll use it as an opportunity to hear people's criticisms of Grand Park (CONCRETE) in order to improve it.
From what I've heard its not going to be implemented into Grand Park at all. That it would be a divided park. How tragically stupid & very LA is that?

Grand Park has streets running through it so I understand that implementing a continuous park would've been difficult. But this? It's already continuous! If you're right, and I'm hoping you aren't, I'll be irate. Impeccably stupid indeed.

I would love to see a sports-oriented park with a swimming pool (with swimming lanes) or tennis courts. Since Americans have become the international symbol for obesity, let's get people moving. My favorite park in the world is the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris...and the tennis courts there are so perfect because you don't expect them in that setting. Put some trees and chess tables and bocci ball and you draw a diverse population. It would compliment Grand Park. So it would not be stupid...but very LA!

The county owns Grand Park but the CITY will own this new little plot.. And there is silly drama between the two (park-wise) apparently.

Skate park! It's youth-focused, could take advantage of the existing building foundation, and would be a nod to modern skateboarding's birth in LA. With a setting like City Hall and WDCH, it'd be a favorite for competitions and filming.

That's one hell of an idea. Doubt it would fly with the old farts in the City Hall though.

Agreed. They'd likely settle for similar old fart ideas like tennis courts or bocci ball

But even before then I don't ever recall another small bldg, much less 2 other small bldgs, also being on that stretch of olympic. that's why I was surprised to see the psychic reader store in eclipse's photo.

this shot of the area was taken back in 2011, so it still shows the small bldg you were talking about.....

^ there are so many layers of tackiness in dt, that one has to be there....actually standing smack dab in the hood....to recall & know what's there. the average person at the last minute will notice things like that now demolished old 2 story bldg, & be more by that, then notice whether a new bldg is tall enough, or whether it lacks store space on the 1st floor, or whether it's architecturally wonderful enough.

I wish dtla had reached that stage in its evolution where I could be confident in guessing that most ppl, if they weren't thrilled with the hood, were honing in on things like a new apt bldg not being of Pritzker design quality instead of things like the tired old bldgs across from LA live. Or, yes, the horrible parking lots.

Spring Street Park is now open.

Snapped a few around 6:00 tonight. I didn't realize so many downtowners own dogs.

wonderful! who'd have thought such sights were possible on spring st even a few yrs ago? not only would the idea of young families enjoying a childrens area in a park in dt....much less on the eastern side of dt.....been unthinkable, but the assumption that anyone....ANYone....other than the homeless....would be hanging out in the hood would have been considered delusional.

I've seen your postings in the city photos page of ssp but almost never or rarely comment there. just want to say that you have a knack for taking pics that always make me feel about the city.

I've browsed through rather expensive pictorial books on LA....often known as 'coffee table' books, & which can be found in the remainder section of barnes & nobles....that don't give me as good or positive a sense of the city.

The city has said lots of things, I'm just saying what I've been told from people within Grand Park. (And by the choice of words / attitude of the mayors announcement this morning).

And no - I don't think people get it just yet - specially those viewing from afar.

There are almost as many dogs out as humans along Spring at any given moment. It was great to see your pictures and the crowd of good people this evening! With no security & no funds for Spring St Park, it's really up to the residents of Historic Core to make this our own and keep the trash out and off the ground.

The Mayor basically said at the opening today that are going to have an international design competition for the new park and the way it came across to me was that it was definitely two separate parks. Perhaps that will change, but that's what I took away from the speeches at the park this morning...

Seems like it would be more work to keep this new park separated from Grand Park. I'm sure common sense will prevail in this situation.

They better be relocating the Galaxy though because there's no way I'd switch over to f****** Chivas or some other rebranded team.
There was this rendering floating around showing a revamp Coliseum sans the Sports Arena.

I would like to see the Galaxy move downtown, and Chivas rebranded and/or moved.

Didn't USC just get the long-term lease for the Coliseum? If that's the case, I doubt this will move forward.

Great pictures, pwright1. Nice to see some of my neighbors in those shots. And while I wouldn't go as far as to call it a "park", it does an excellent job of being a nice, charming little public plaza that should get a lot of use by the locals.

Well Tom LaBonge was quoted in the Daily Breeze in saying that they are looking at multiple sites, including possibly the Piggyback Yard.

Maybe it's just me, but i think park designs in LA are getting better and better with each passing opening of a major park.

Makes me a little excited about what Park 101 and Hollywood Cap are gonna look like.

Spring Street Park doesn't look bad at all. Give time for the plantlife to grow and you'll have yourself a nice little green space. Should there have been more trees? Sure. But it's far from a barren concrete wasteland. I like it.

Thanks guys. I was pretty impressed. I don't what kind of grass they used but it feels extra plush and soft.
