I know. Lately this forum is so negative. Nothing can be developed without people just being okay about it. Its a drag up in this place.

So question. What makes something count as a Metro? I look at Salt Lake and Ogden and wonder why its not just one metro? Even Provo/Orem. Salt lake Is practically connected to these cities as well

It's defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and designated based on a formula that takes into account how many commuters (jobs and otherwise) the core city receives from certain areas. I'm assuming there isn't enough coming in from Ogden/Provo to clump them with the Salt Lake metro. It's convoluted, but you gotta remember that it's a blanket designation, so, it's being used by every metro in the country. If the Census changes its definition of what constitutes a metro, it would then have to go in and change it in every state - potentially negating any gains Salt Lake would see by the addition of Ogden to the metro.

Case in point: Cleveland, Ohio. Akron is within the same distance to Cleveland as Ogden is SLC, but Akron has its own metro - which is actually larger than the Ogden metro by about 156,000 people. You make the change here and then you've got to make the change there and everywhere else that radically redefines what the OMB considers a MSA designated area.

So, it really isn't necessarily defined by distance and rather just the connectivity of the metro. I do believe one day the metro will once again rejoin as the Salt Lake City-Ogden metro - but for now? It doesn't meet their requirements.

Bill Oram @tribjazz "The Jazz will hold a Monday press conference for a "major facility announcement." What upgrades are most pressing at ESA?"

Also heard Jazz President Randy Rigby talking about this earlier this morning on 1280.

I personally think it is a jumbotron/ scoreboard upgrade, and possibly something to honor Jerry Sloan (even though he is still helping out behind the scenes, and GM Dennis Lindsey has hinted to some sort of announcement concerning him this week).

What do you guys think? Do you think this could be an unfolding of plans for an extensive renovation?

I 98% positive it's a new scoreboard/jumbotron. I have a friend that works for Daktronics and he has been working with the Jazz and Greg Miller regarding a new one. I'm not saying it couldn't be more, but I sure it's at least that.

I hope it's more then just a new jumbotron. I would like to see a full ESA makeover.

I don't think we'll see an entire makeover in one off season. Two off seasons ago they added the new restaurants/pubs, Farr's, and the additional Fanzz stores. This off season a new scoreboard. I think they'll do it one project at a time.

I personally don't think there is all that much to make over, on the inside. I like the raw industrial exposed concrete look. I would, like most on here, like to see them expand the overall lobby area out into the plaza some.

Yea I was thinking more towards them expanding the lobby area out towards the plaza when I talked about a makeover. Hope that's in their plans even if it will take a few years.

Considering it took 20 years to get a new jumobtron, I'm gonna guess we'll be waiting a while longer for complete renovation! haha

New townhomes planned at 200 W. 200 N. where Hansen's Service station was/is.

UDOT and SLC beautifying 300 W. from N. Temple to 900 N.
Trees, plantings, new lighting and mid-road berms.

Humm I didn't get this news letter... It seems like I read somewhere that Hanson was protected from being demolished... I could never figure that one out.. I'm glad they are going to do something

Any info on the developer of all these town homes.... They should rip down the old deserate first credit union building and put some town homes there to... I would also like to see O.P. Skaggs reopen.

I'm also curious as to why the block between 500 - 600 north and 300 and 200 west is now considered "the" marmalade block... I grew up between 200-300 west and I don't remember anyone in that area ever considering anything west of 200 west being a part of the marmalade district... That particular block sure as hell never defined the marmalade district... So why is it now "The" Marmalade block??? Back in the day it was well know as both the Safeway block and the drug block... There was a place called marsh auto that was a front for the main drug operation in the area. Has the marmalade district been expanded or is it just a little known fact that it goes beyond 200 west?

And in other Gateway related news. The place is literally starting to fall a part. The stone railing caps on the second level are crumbling down all over the place... It looks horrible. Valley fair Mall officialy looks better then gateway now.

Also over the past few months I have attended movies at all of the major theaters in salt lake county. Out of all of the movie theaters operated by megaplex and all of the first run theaters operated by cinemark.. Megaplex 12 is by far the most outdated, run down, and poorly maintained... The screen in the main auditorium has been ripped for nearly 2 years, if not longer, and they don't even seem to care. The audio is outdated, the projectors have faded coloring, and the seats are really worn down. Also the burnt in CRT monitors and generally outdated decor... Give the place an icky factor.... I don't get it. Megaplex maintains its other locations very well. Jordan commons witch is older then gateway has all new leather seats and all of the modern amenities..... I guess it's just a reflection of where the whole mall is headed.

Sorry for the rant but its sad how rapidly that place is in decline

Few things from the Tribune.
""We’re looking at major improvements over the next five or six years," he said at the team’s preseason media day, "continuing to build up our facilities to be a top-quality NBA property.""

Up to six years? Playing catch up now today in six years we will still have to play catch up since I'm sure everybody else will continue to make further improvements to their facilities during that time span.

"Last season, the Houston Rockets installed a 58-foot-wide video screen. Memphis Grizzlies owner Robert Pera said earlier this year that FedEx Forum would soon install wireless Internet for fans."

Other cities go out and get the best state of the art device to replace their Jumbo-trons/scoreboards/video screens that are a lot newer then our 22 year old Jumbotron.
Houston gets a 58-foot-wide video screen.......well then we better get a 59 foot screen then. Point is the Jazz not only need to try to update everything, but they also need to try to one up the other guys by putting in something bigger, better and unique.
In other words, I don't want ESA to look like that we are a small market team, even though we are. Hope the Millers put some big money into these improvements. Otherwise in six years ( too long if you ask me ) when all is said and done we will still be behind most other teams. No more playing catch up Salt Lake.

Where ESA ranks on bleacherreport
http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/1374029-ranking-all-30-nba-arenas/page/17
"If you want to go to the place where Michael Jordan took his final shot as a member of the Chicago Bulls then this is the place to go, but if you want to go to a place with a championship banner hanging in the rafters, look elsewhere."

Well isn't that nice, 20+ plus years if history and all we are known for is the place that M.J. Took his final shot. And that the only banners we have are of retire names. God our team's a joke.

SLC Projects, chill out. I print out Bleacherreport articles and wipe my — with them. Bleacher is for hack writers and faulty information, and everyone knows this.

You should be well aware that our organization is known for a lot more than that. The greatest PG (all time leader in assists, and all time leader in steals record holder), the best PF in the history of the game (2nd in all time pts), a HOF coach, one of the best all time Nba team records, etc, etc. So we don't have a championship. If there wasn't the freak of nature that was Michael Jordan, and the lockout, we would have dominated in 96, 97, and 98. We have a lot to be grateful for, and our time will come. (I SAY 4 years, after a horrible season next year to preserve our cap space, develop thw young guys more, fill out the team, and then use our cap space). We will be serious title contemders very soon.
