It's great to see that Quebecor is financing/maintaining the new bus shelters by itself. It should be interesting to see if they are kept cleaner.

New bus shelters will feature interactive screens

By Andy Riga, GAZETTE TRANSPORTATION REPORTER
June 4, 2013 5:07 PM

MONTREAL - For the second time in three years, Montreal’s transit agency has unveiled a “bus shelter for the 21st century.”

This time, some of the new shelters will include 84-inch interactive screens featuring advertising, bus schedules, maps, news and weather.

In 2010, the Société de transport de Montréal disclosed a sleek redesign — a glass cube with a slanting roof — and said 400 of the new shelters would be in place by 2013.

But the initiative stalled and only three of the new shelters were built — on René-Lévesque Blvd. near Jeanne-Mance St. and in front of CEGEP Ahuntsic and the Langelier métro station.

On Tuesday, Quebecor Media, which recently won a 20-year contract to oversee STM bus shelters, announced it will push ahead with the transition to new shelters.

It said it will replace 1,870 current shelters and add 850 by 2023. The switchover will begin this fall, with the installation of 200 shelters, including 40 high-tech versions, Quebecor Media said.

The company is responsible for installing, maintaining and selling advertising on STM bus shelters

Quebecor Media spokesperson Martin Tremblay said it’s unclear how many of the interactive screens will eventually be installed. That will depend on how the public reacts to them, he said.

McGill purchasing the Royal Vic is probably the best possible outcome for the old hospital.

McGill University mulls big campus expansion onto Royal Vic site
‘Looking seriously’ at a bid for hospital buildings, land: university official

By JAN RAVENSBERGEN, THE GAZETTE
June 6, 2013 9:32 AM

MONTREAL — McGill University is mulling a big move — seeking to dramatically expand the footprint of its downtown campus by taking in some or all of the Royal Victoria Hospital complex.

The sprawling hospital is to be emptied once the new Montreal University Health Centre superhospital in the city’s west end is fully functioning.

“We are looking seriously” at mounting a bid to take over the Vic’s majestic structures — and the land on which they stand, dominating the southern flank of Mount Royal — to give them a teaching and research vocation, Olivier Marcil, vice-principal for communications and external relations, said in a Thursday morning interview.

This would resolve the university’s substantial and growing space deficit, Marcil added.

It also represents, he added, “an opportunity to consolidate the future of McGill University.”

Adding the Royal Vic site to the existing downtown campus with a specific health sciences vocation is “what we have in mind for the moment,” Marcil said.

A no-brainer. Surprised McGill is only 'mulling' this move now. It should have prepared a take-over years ago, in my opinion.

That would be ideal. And, if that happened, it would be nice to demolished some of the newer additions that deface the old victorian buildings.

Logically, it should be used by the faculty of medecine that is very close from the Royal Vic.

On paper it sounds ideal, but in reality those old buildings are a financial nightmare to renovate and maintain (have you ever been inside the royal Vic.)

I read in the papers that though the Royal Vic is worth $177 million, there are about $200 million worth of renovation to be done. So whoever buys the VIc will have to dish out about 400 million dollars. I understand now that this is insane.

^Good render, — project.

What doesn't jive with me here:

-Not tall enough. Should be 20 floors at least.
-Mediocre architecture. Would look great in Longueuil.
-NO retail or commerce. We don't need to turn lower Mackay into a sleepy suburban street, we need pubs, bars, shish taouk restaurants or a clinic or something, this is steps away from the EV building and the rest of Concordia.

I completely agree. This is very basic architecture and the lack of ground-level retail is unforgivable. Having said that, I don't mind 10 storey buildings on side streets in the core, provided they are attractive and contain ground-level retail (both of which this project does not). Unfortunately, I suspect it may already be approved because it doesn't exceed the maximum allowed height (the city seems not to care about architectural quality or other things...)

I believe that this might be a second phase of Flex Condos on Bishop. Although at least the ones on Bishop will have ground-level businesses.

It's generic for sure, but this isn't exactly a very attractive stretch of Saint-Laurent.

That stretch of the main has gentrified greatly in the last decade. I live there actually, and I've seen it transform into an extension of mile end. It has great restaurants, pubs and night clubs. Ubisoft is around the corner. This stretch deserves better.
