You don't have to bother to make any more ignorant comments. You can make them amongst yourselfs! And by the way I won't be wasting my time on this site anymore, so if you leave more ignorant remarks, you won't have the opportunity for me to read them because I'm done with this site for good! Just for your information I know many decent people in HRM and in this province and friends that have left HRM and the province, that have said and made the same exact comments and who agree with me totally on my views. I also know a lot people like myself because of what I outlined in my last post that are leaving HRM and the province permanently and there will be many more to follow.

Anyway, just pertaining to the crime thing again: Crime is down over last year, and last year it was down over 2011. FYI.

Also, 100,000 people for Parade of Lights, about that for Halifax Pride, and repeated 10-40K people at concerts at the Common and the Hill... we actually have a track record of getting masses of people on the peninsula for major events.

This reminds me of a 4 year old having a tantrum. None of us in the forum are saying that a stadium isn't something we should build - it's a matter of getting the right stadium, in the right place and using it to facilitate something great. Sorry if that's not acceptable to you - but that's life and there are lots of things the City has to pay for and not everything can be accommodated.

Waye is absolutely right - there is a track record of big/great events on the peninsula and ultimately when a decision is made on where this goes - some people aren't going to be happy about it. But that's Council's role - to make that decision. Not us, not you, not anyone else in the city.

I think I mentioned that thought way back in the parade/festivals thread I create (a while back). The economic benefits can't easily be measured but simply from the perspective of the 'energy factor' in the city - priceless. These big tournaments create life, energy and get people really jazzed up.

One of the things I love about Calgary is the stampede. I watch the parade every year from my balcony (because I live on the parade route) and I have people come over who watch it too. It's amazing - those 12 days, this city is just beyond alive. Fireworks every night, pancake breakfasts (for free) every day around the DT core. I'm sad that Halifax doesn't have that, but there is potential to do it. I actually thought it might be really cool to eventually see some sort of expansion of Exhibition Park to include a permanent amusement park with roller coasters, rides and an indoor aquatic park that could operate year round. Would really jazz up that facility...

Just came across this (may be old news to everybody here), but I'm absolutely speechless at the size of stadiums used for high school sports in the US (specifically Texas). Makes our quest for a professional sports stadium seem miniscule in comparison...

When I was in Texas, I was staying in Plano (just about 40 mins outside of Dallas proper) area for a month or so. I got to see a CHURCH that had a stadium!! Prestonwood Baptist Church or as the locals call it "the Baptidome" is one of the biggest churches in the US, the one building I saw can seat 7000 for services, and can be seen for miles, you could actually fit the Metro Centre into this thing it's so big. The adjoining church high school utilizes the stadium. It was absolutely bonkers.

Texas isn't exactly a rational example of for what we should be striving -- but the examples you've provided are certainly interesting.

Most of the money is raised by selling BONDS or by directing specific sales tax dollars towards it ie: Hotel or Rental Car taxes

I think they realise that you have to spend money to make money and more so with a pro team than a High School team. The economic spin off of building a stadium through the taxes the construction workers make, people going out for food and drinks before or after a game, people coming into town and staying at hotels, all of this is a benefit and drives the economic impact.

The longer Halifax waits, the more expensive a stadium will get.....

I used to attend a church in Fort Lauderdale and they were not afraid to spend money for a special program. Xmas eve service used to cost us $20,000 to $40,000 to do the service, musicians, singers, lazer light shows, etc. Can you imagine a Canadian church spending that kind of money for one evening? But if you take in double that everyone wins.
It's an American thing, 'Build it and they will come' is the how they think. Canadians and especially Haligonians do not have this mentality.

Let's fund our enthusiasm for sports via the Texas Method: cut science classes, 🞵🞵🞵 education, reduce the hours per day in school, and pay our teachers as though they work at Wal-Mart!

Now, this may considerably harm the middle-class in our region -- but remember: a stadium will make some people richer!
