Does anyone know how they're going to be cladding the underside of the the cantilever? I hope it's more than unfinished concrete and steel.

I read today that Judith Hare, CEO of Halifax Libraries, is retiring this year. Interesting... Does this mean that the new Central Library will be a palace built for the people and not for the Queen?

I know she has been mentioned several times in this thread by Keith but I actually don't know anything about her. I do think it's interesting that she played a central role in getting this huge project underway before retirement. Quite an impressive achievement.

I think she is getting out of town with her sacks of gold before the audit of the books reveals how she hosed the HRM ratepayers on this project. Or, possibly, she realizes that the palace cannot possibly be sustained with any kind of manageable budget and does not want to face the reckoning over the bill of goods she sold to Council. Certainly the shameful way she hijacked the site selection, the budget approval, the design, and the construction management processes for this edifice is an expensive legacy we taxpayers will be dealing with for decades to come.

Or, she is 66 years old, the project was delayed so long she will be 68 before it is done, and she wants to, you know, retire, as people do!

Out here in Alberta, all civil servants (Municipal and Provincial) are part of the same pension plan - the Local Authorities Pension plan. They send us these updates every year (how much I'd get if I retire now, how long to my retirement, etc.). Assuming I stay with Calgary, I can retire at 58 with a full pension...but given the assumed draw down, I'm planning to retire at 70 lol. Wow, that's a long time...35 more years of being a planner. Ouch!

The second photo is pretty darn close to what the glass actually looks like. Not even close to the vibrant orange in the renderings. Another case of what we're getting is not what we were sold. Quite disappointing. The vibrant orange would have made a bold look-at-me statement. However what we are getting is the glass equivalent of boring Halifax brick.
