Yup, probably one of the ugliest, most boring and least inspired areas of montreal. A generic mid-century north american suburb, essentially. Montreal's a nice city really if you exclude the entire north half of the island, completely ignore anything east of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and bits and pieces out west.

As was pointed out earlier, the offending student warehouses are all in Waterloo, and indeed, in one specific (horrific) part of Waterloo. Please don't drag Kitchener into it. K-W may be one in many ways but they remain two different cities.

I honestly think if we removed the ugly balcony's and the random orange it would look great.... this is a first for Moncton and a pretty significant project for a city of this size... These aren't final renders, this is the first design, so they may have changes, if not I think we can live with it... the city of Moncton needs some color!

It is butt-ugly. However, progress needs to start somewhere, and often times, this is at the bottom. I say build it.

At the very least, it is an imposing building, and perhaps it will initiate a revival of design in Moncton.

I just want to know who was responsible for material and colour choices? The actual shape of the building isn't that bad.

Looks a bit too tropical for Moncton (or Canada for that matter). I suspect they will tone it down.

The Moncton building's form is not bad at all, and definitely a strong step forward for that city (Although the street level could be a bit more inviting/pedestrian-friendly). The materials are what makes it seem ugly; hopefully they'll be toned down before it's built.

Brunswick Square certainly isn't the nicest building in Saint John, but I don't think it's too bad.

To witness a true New Brunswick fugly, one has to head to Moncton, where upon the muddy shores of the Petitcodiac rests the gloriously hideous Chateau Moncton. 50% ugly faux-historic façade, 50% imposing and cheap-looking red roof, 100% horrible:

I gotta say that the construction equipment and broken pavement in the foreground is not nearly as ugly as that looming pile of shit in the background. wretched building. even beats anything in downtown Longueuil--something I never thought was possible.

Wow, nice!

My hometown (Sherbrooke QC, metro area pop 202,000 at the last census and growing...) would LOVE to have such a classy office building in its CBD.

That is a seriously kickass building for such a small city as Saint John.

It does not belong in this thread, would instead be perfectly at home featured in a "Cities that punch way above their weight" thread.

Saint John used to be a city of national importance. Back in the 1960's and 70's it was considered more of a mid-sized centre, and if you go back as far as 1850 or so it was the same size as Toronto. I think it has experienced the biggest and longest-lasting relative decline of any city in Canada. Imagine if Montreal stopped growing in 1890 and was the size of Winnipeg today.

I believe the white house at the foot of that office tower is from the late-1700's, and was once Benedict Arnold's residence. Unfortunately, most Canadians don't really appreciate that this level of history exists in the Maritimes.
