Cohon challenges Maritimes to support new CFL team
Mark Cohon tells Moncton he wants a Maritime team within his mandate
CBC News May 17, 2013

The Maritimes could support a Canadian Football League team and could see one take the field in the future, according to CFL commissioner Mark Cohon.

Cohon was in Moncton on Thursday to promote Touchdown Atlantic, a regular season game between the Montreal Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sept. 21.

Cohon challenged people at a Moncton news conference to help him bring a team to the Maritimes.

"There's always been a dream of people involved in the CFL to think about a 10th team and for that to work I think you need to get the entire community behind it, so that's just a little bit of challenge to get people thinking," he said.

Cohon said he isn't buying the argument the Maritime region does not have a strong enough business base to support a team of its own.

"I think that we could probably get a couple of the national sponsors of the CFL to back this," said Cohon.

"If you could unite the country through the CFL, if you could bring the Maritimes into the rest of Canada through the power of sport, I think it's a powerful tool for this region to create pride."

Cohon says groundwork needs to be laid

Cohon said bringing a CFL team to the Maritime region is still a long way off.

Cohon said the costs of bringing a CFL team to the Maritime must still be studied.

He wants leaders to begin looking at options for a stadium, including what it would cost to upgrade the Moncton stadium.

"We'd have to do an analysis of how much that would cost," he said.

"We have to look at is there potential of a stadium being built in Halifax, regardless of what city it's in I think the real question is how do you get people together to say that this is good for the Maritimes."

In the past, Cohon has estimated the Moncton Stadium would likely need $100 million in upgrades to meet the league’s standards.

He said on Thursday a team would generate great excitement and momentum for the entire region whether it's in Moncton or Halifax.

"Imagine almost a million people every week watching your team on TV," he said.

Province to invest $100,000

Premier David Alward says the provincial investment of $100,000 will pay off for New Brunswick taxpayers.

Premier David Alward said the provincial government will invest $100,000 in the Touchdown Atlantic game for marketing with the City of Moncton.

Alward said it is an investment that makes sense for taxpayers.

"The last time the CFL was in Moncton it generated some $6 million of economic benefits to the southeast part of New Brunswick," he said on Thursday.

"The province of New Brunswick will gain more than the dollars we contribute back just in the taxes from this event so it's a great event, it brings excellence to Atlantic Canada."

Moncton is investing $180,000 in the game.

Jacques Dubé, Moncton's city manager, said $150,000 will cover the costs of bringing the two teams to Moncton, $25,000 for protecting the track at the stadium and $5,000 putting up the extra stands.

No offence to Moncton but if a CFL team is to end up in the maritimes it should be in Halifax. If only they could get a stadium built...

I'm sure none taken, but in my opinion. Moncton deserves it more...

The city is actually promoting the league and actually actively doing something. What honestly is Halifax doing? Give it to the city and province that seems to want it....

Exactly right. Off the top of my head, the only thing going in Halifax's favour is the proximity to a larger local business community and a higher profile football history (university)

I think Moncton would actually have access to a larger amount of people to draw on within a two hour radius who would be willing to make the trip. Moncton would draw from SJ, Freddy Beach, Northern NB and NS, and PEI. Tack an additional 2 and a half hours for them to get to Hfx.

There has been almost a complete role reversal between the towns in the past 10-20 years. Where once Halifax was proactive and Moncton retiring, they seem to have switched roles. It used to be one way traffic for people to go to Halifax to shop/party/— and for students to attend university. Halifax isn't so much the "big city" to Moncton anymore.

Moncton has been getting the better of the large summer concert scene for several years now drawing 50k crowds. The problem with Moncton is that these are all one-off events and the city hasn't really had a chance to prove itself long term other than the local hockey team in the "Q"

It will be interesting to see how the upcoming TD Atlantic does. The last one while successful (97% capacity) did not sell out. The debate is what does this say about a city in the running for a franchise that doesn't sell out a one-off.

If Moncton could get a loyal fanbase coming in from the areas mentioned above with some Haligonians making the occasional trip, it could work.

The matter of the 100 million to refurb the stadium sounds excessively high and would be a difficult sell even to proactive Moncton.

Heh! ... If they could schedule a TD Atlantic game featuring a match-up with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, I'm pretty sure it would be a sell-out event! I think there are enough Rider fans around the country that would make the trip out to fabulous Atlantic Canada to compliment the patrons already out there to fill up the seats, and then some!

... Yeah, but admittedly, I think the point of these scheduled regular season detours is to probe whether local interest -- then and now, and without exceptional help -- can contribute to the successful, long-term stability/sustainability of a CFL franchise. From here, it looks pretty good! Just wait until you do get the franchise up and running, regardless where it locates! You'll fast realize you need a larger stadium, when the Riders and their fans are in town!

I'm a former Haligonian and agree with you; Moncton deserves the team. Halifax just sits there and expects a franchise handed to them. Moncton is a far more ambitious and pro-development city and it shows in their growth rate. Halifax? They had a Commonwealth stadium funded by the feds and still couldn't get it together.

Put it in Moncton.

I agree with all said that Moncton deserves it, but the question remains, can they support one better than Halifax could?

- Inside the south stands, the contractor has begun pouring the basement floor
- More columns and walls have been built to support the third floor of the south stands while a large section of second floor has already been poured
- Structural support elements for the seating bowls on the second level in the south stands are being installed
- The new roof for the north stands is being assembled in sections on the stadium field

Building a new pedestrian ramp at the east end of the north stands

The stadium seen from above is undergoing a big transformation as the north stands get a new look and the new south stands continue to take shape

The new roof for the north stands is being assembled on the stadium field and will soon be lifted into place with the help of a special, mobile crane

Supports to form the third floor of the new south stands are going up at the east end of the stands and moving west

The stadium is a busy place as the north stands roof is assembled and work on the third floor for the new south stands continues

You guys are right. Moncton definitely deserves a team more than Halifax. Halifax is just the ideal place for a team...

As far as location, Moncton is the ideal place, they don't call it the "Hub of the Maritimes" for nuthin'

Just because it's in a central area of the Maritimes doesn't make it the ideal location. There are many more factors that come to play in the placement of a franchise.

Any news in Calgary about a stadium? All I've seen recently are "rumours" which aren't even rumours. I think they're just made up in the hopes of forcing the issue.

The last confirmed things I've read:

Selling naming rights could help fund renovations at McMahon Stadium

“Minor renovations is what we’re talking about today, and then major renovations — which are very significant — will hopefully take place in the future,” King said. “A real renovation — a $100 million renovation, that kind of thing — is where you would go at some point. Or you would replace it, and I think replacing it would be a long shot.”

^I'ts been quiet other than the recent rumours of a new stadium being combined with a new arena/convention centre on the west side of downtown. Apparently there may be an announcement by the Flames in the next 2 months.
I think the stadium should be top of the list in terms of Calgary's priorities. I would be thrilled with something similar to IGF in the Peg, perhaps a little larger (35-40k). Lose the roof though, I like being in the sunshine.

That's just a few off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more. I'd imagine you'd probably already know all of that anyway... So why do you ask?

Because I stated most of those reasons in my previous post (in favour of Moncton). You seem to think it should be placed in Halifax. I was wondering why, aside from the reasons I already posted most of which you just repeated above.

I just believe if Halifax had a stadium and an owner it would support a CFL team better in the long run. I admire Moncton's determination in pursuing a CFL team but I really don't think they have the population and corporate support to handle a team and I also doubt that many people from around the province will drive 1-2 hours for every game. That's why I believe Halifax would be better for the CFL. Just my opinion.

Oh relax Elly, it's not like he was copying you or read your previous post anyways. Halifax is obviously, clearly the place that would make more sense for it to be placed. Moncton is just the place fighting for it. Halifax is three times the size of Moncton, with healthy population and economic growth, much more of a corporate presence, much more of a chance of getting funding for a decent stadium, and a much bigger immediate population base to support the team. Hell, the province of Nova Scotia alone has over 200 000 more people than NB, plus Halifax has nearly 300 000 more people than Moncton.
