i think such a project is in the works.. itll probably be announced in july

They put out an expression of interest.. theyve gave the owner plenty time to redevelop or renovate the bldg and he hasnt done that either. The city has no other choice

It gets tiring hearing about this or that being 'biggest', 'tallest', 'best', etc. between Calgary and Toronto. We're the biggest market by far between those two cities, so it stands to reason that most of the time we would have the 'biggest', 'tallest', etc. between them...

I wonder if people in Regina clamour over having the tallest building between Calgary and Winnipeg, or if people in Portage La Prairie claim the tallest building between Brandon and Winnipeg.

Obviously if you go directly East from Calgary, you won't hit Edmonton. But that said, if you go directly East from Calgary (or Winnipeg), you won't hit Toronto, either. Edmonton is east of Calgary (North-North-East, to be specific).

The Regis, St Charles, Royal Albert and Carlton all have to go, while the stucco, crime infested Best Western toilet (with an entrance onto an alley )surrounded by its own surface parking persists. The trifling fascists at Centre Venture apparently get to decide what's highbrow enough (built in the last 50 years) to exist south of Portage, while the crown corp pinkos pick away at the exchange district. Edit : Actually , I just measured it on Google Earth to make sure. It's closer to Edmonton. Go figure. I stand corrected. On the other hand , I guess I'm not the only one who thinks it's further to Edmonton. I guess it is by driving distance but otherwise...

I am ready to do what ever it takes to keep the St. Charles up. From lobbying councillors to picketing in front of a wrecking ball (as cliche and illegal as that may be). If we can come up with some good ideas, maybe we can prevent this from happening. Does anybody know the cost that is desired?

Two Ontario-based developers announced Wednesday that they plan to build the tallest building between Toronto and Calgary at Garry Street and Graham Avenue.

The 42-storey mixed-use building will “transform the skyline,” they said.

Currently, 201 Portage Ave., where Global Winnipeg is based, is the tallest building in Winnipeg. But what other tall buildings have been raised between Toronto and Calgary?

Here are the locations and heights of the 10 tallest:

*1) 201 Portage Ave. – 128 metres

2) Hamilton, Ont. – 127 metres

*3) Richardson Building – 124.1 metres

*4) 360 Main St. – 117 metres

I'm going to draft up a letter tonight, I encourage anyone else who does to post theirs on here as well as inspiration and a guideline for others.

Here's an e-mail I sent this morning:

Dear Members of the Standing Committee on Downtown Development, Heritage and Riverbank Management:

I write to you regarding the St. Charles Hotel, which I understand will be an item for discussion at your Monday, May 27 meeting.

While I fully support and applaud efforts by the City to seize this property after years of neglect and numerous orders to bring the building into compliance with its by-laws, I am deeply concerned by media reports claiming that this historic building may be demolished if developers are not found after a 90 day period.

I hope that these media reports are simply false. However, I want to covey in the strongest terms possible my firm opposition to the demolition of this important heritage building which stands as a gateway to our historic Exchange District.

Many heritage advocates in Winnipeg have long been concerned that the present owner of the St.Charles Hotel is moving toward 'demolition by neglect'. It would be incredibly ironic for the City to demolish this structure after attempting for years to prevent this from happening.

I strongly urge you to reconsider any action that would place this building on a short timeline for demolition.

In the meantime, I would welcome any further information or clarification you could provide about the Committee's intention for this property.

Even if it was further to Edmonton, his point would still be correct. Edmonton is East of Calgary, so the new tower wouldn't be the tallest building between Toronto and Calgary, Epcor Tower in Edmonton would be. Saying its the tallest building in Winnipeg would sufface, since the curretn tallest between Toronto and "Calgary" (really Edmonton) is in Winnipeg

They are basically a condo of bedrooms where your living room is in the kitchen.

They actually have a 3 bedroom condo that is only 850 sq ft in size for well over $500,000.

As crazy as that is, those would probably be listed at around 250 000-300 000 rather than 500 000 in Winnipeg. Remember we are talking about two completely different markets.

Authentic, I used your email as a baseline for a response to the city councillors. Thank you. It was well articulated and presents the problem at hand very clearly. If enough people send similar emails, the councillors should get the message.

Granted. Winnipeg would probably see about $300-350 sq ft (probably higher if the building is taller) but still, the design of the units is for people who really only sleep in their apartments.

Even reviewers in Toronto are making the same observations of the ridiculously small (non-bedroom) living space. Most call it a "living room with a fridge".
