Went to the Molson/Crosstown public meeting tonight. The overall message relayed to the developers and the city is "Do better".

They're talking about building the retail and strip-mally stuff first..and then demolish and rebuild as mixed-used residential if the LRT is built and there's a demand for residential. Some speakers argued the demand is there now, especially for mult-bedroom family condos.

Parking came up again and again...the most persistent comments were that Oliver Square parking lots are half-empty even during peak shopping hours, and that most commuters aren't stopping at Oliver Square, it's mainly local residents.

They said there's a lot of challenges with turning the old brewery into anything marketable...though personally I think a microbrewery with a brewpub would be killer (my write-in suggestion).

So... with traditional zoning and not being bound to any site design like they show, all they really want to do is rezone, build the retail strip mall and press autopilot for 25 years.

I'd think they want to get the retail first... Pad sites are easy to build and they can start generating revenue right away. I know they're pressing for apartments on that site but it's probably not viable right now... There's a lot on the market in much better locations than this.

I think you'll see the resi component come eventually. After the lrt shows up... So it could be 10 years down the road yet

I had the chance to talk to somebody who was at the molson meeting at the UDI party after. Whatever happens with this site, it is very encouraging that the people who show up at these meetings are no longer just the geriatrics who bitch and complain about traffic and parking.

Before my time on the board, Our CL failed four years ago becuase of the contingent of crusty old curmudgeons that opposed everything and refused to work with anyone. It got so bad that the CL had to dissolve because they alienated so many, that no one wanted to be involved and there weren't enough to make a quorum.

The group that stepped up to the plate is much younger, open to new ideas and interested in moving the meighborhood forward. It's been great... even our seniors director (the only one in the group over 40!) is getting involved in urban style discussions.

Seems to be a trend thoughout the city

Applications for New Multi-Family Development Permits in the City of Edmonton in the first quarter of 2013 are up 92% from the same period last year, a new report says.

Applications for New Commercial and Industrial Development Permits are up 24%, according to the Current Planning Branch Quarterly Activity Report. More Plumbing, Gas, Electrical and Building Permits have been issued compared to the same time last year. Almost 22,000 safety inspections have been carried out.

Scott Mackie, Branch Manager says, “I am impressed with the responsiveness of staff in meeting the level of demand. While our city enjoys exceptional growth, we will continue delivering effective planning and development decisions and great customer service. We are improving our services and making application processes faster and more straightforward.”
