I'm guessing they're demolishing the old Famous Players/Cineplex Odeon as well?

Probably not... I mean, that part of the complex is attached to existing high-rise apartments. Unless the residents gave full and unanimous approval to such drastic changes... most likely the Station Square complex closest to the bus loop will just get refurbished to bring it in line with the rest of the project.

That building will be renovated instead, that's why almost all businesses moved out.

The original plan was to renovate the building. However I have a feeling this might change once the 5 towers are completed. There was a news article last year that mentioned the building 'might' eventually get replaced.

The building is so old steel bar was added to the ground foor outside the Sushi shop a few years ago to reinfoce the 2nd floor. It looked like some structure issue was found.

At the time both stores were profitable plus it gives the impression to the consumer that there is proper competition. 1) customers would actually comparison shop and then decide where to buy and feel happy that they did their research and 2) if a customer has a bad experience at one shop, s/he goes to the other.

basically a consumer mind game. pretty brilliant.

Here is an update from today.
All pictures are taken by my iPod and are not claimed as quality photography

I walked down the back lane from the Skytrain station and noticed that the pedestrian bridge was gone:

After that, I turned north and saw there are really little more than a few external walls remaining of the Save-On:

I walked further north down the lane, and this is a view through that void facing south west instead of north west:

As I walked past that section of wall, I saw that this is what 3/4 of the Save-On footprint looks like now:

As I walked to the corner of the lot where the lane meets Kingsway, I took some pictures of the Phase I excavation pit:

A bonus shot! I'm sure you'll all be happy to see that Phase II, which includes the 57 floor tower, is on the way!

I walked by the site today. Phase 2 demolition is now completed. The Save-On-Food building is totally gone. Only a pile of rubble remains on the ground. The size of Phase 1 + Phase 2 site is actually quite large.

Also a few workers were surveying the other building that used to house the Dollarama. It is too early to tell what the plan is for that building.

Workers have started to strip content from the building 2nd floor and dump it into dumpster on the ground floor. More demolition or just get ready for renovation?

Presumably just gutting the entire upper floor of the 'mall' part.

Here is another update. The excavation is deeper, some of the rubble has been removed, and futher gutting has been done to the remaining 'mall' building. Metroplace can be seen in the background.

Photo taken by me yesterday.

I believe the pit has reached the final depth. Just the last bit of evacation to finish at the north west corner.

Covered walkway constructed with containers.

Felt like in a tunnel when walking inside.

Those conatiner hoardigs seem to be getting popular.
Telus had one when it was constructing its display centre entrance on Seymour, and the Nehru Bacchra Centre (on Broadway near Ash) has them too.

The rear building is having so much of the walls removed that it looks even more severe than the former Sears building / 725 Granville. If I didn't know better, I would think it's being demolished.

Almost wish during the gutting they go "oops!" and "accidentally" demolish the hotel complex, opening up the whole corner to the station area
