Interesting. Perhaps Day & Ross will come up with another "final" offer....

And in other retail news. There is scaffolding up around the building facade next to Carter's/OshKosh in the Mapleton Centre. This is exactly the location that Banana Republic is supposed to move into.

I would say that BR is going to open soon - probably by sometime this summer.

This will be a critical addition to the Mapleton Centre. I would think other retailers contemplating on taking the plunge in this development will be greatly encouraged to see Banana Republic's arrival. This is a definite vote of confidence in the Mapleton Centre......

As to where else they might set up shop, I don't know.
- I don't think Riverview would be right for Starbuck's at present.
- If the Mapleton Centre were more successful, I would wonder about there.
- If the events centre gets built, that would be an excellent location.
- The atrium at the Moncton Hospital would be a good place for them (several thousand employees, lots of foot traffic, right next to the ambulatory care centre) but I'm pretty sure Tim Horton's has an exclusivity clause with Horizon.
- Starbuck's might do very well at Casino NB.

Beyond that, I have no thoughts.....
only 5? there are more starbucks on robson street in vancouver than 5

Just a tad higher population density I'd say.

Starbuck's relative position in Moncton is occupied by Tim Horton's. There are 34 Timmie's in greater Moncton....

I'm doubtful about that... East Point in Saint John has been somewhat in the same boat as Mapleton Centre, and the Gap Outlet that opened there last fall hasn't exactly been a massive draw to that area.

There is a Gap / Gap outlet now in Freddy, SJ, Moncton and charlottetown. So no the Gap isn't really a draw anymore in the NB/PEI region. BR may be...time will tell I guess.

I think that for Moncton, the upcoming arrival of Marshalls will be a big draw. TJX companies stores do very well here. Winners and HomeSense which are sister stores are always busy, always, and they're the closest thing we've got to "US shopping" in Moncton; price & selection-wise...

Champlain Place Update:

the new concept Pantorama store has reopened. It is certainly much more avant garde and less drab than the old store was.......

This interesting tidbit is from Retail Insider, a blog covering retail news and rumours in Canada:

HUDSON'S BAY OUTLET STORES TO OPEN CANADA-WIDE

A source at Hudson's Bay tells us the company will open Canada-wide outlet stores, not unlike Nordstrom Rack. These will operate as clearance centres for Hudson's Bay merchandise. The first store will open in the Greater Toronto Area, to be followed by other Canadian locations. We are awaiting information on tentative opening dates and locations.

Hudson's Bay is renowned for its sales and we question if Hudson's Bay will continue this in-store trend or if it will move sale merchandise to its outlet stores, not unlike Nordstrom with its Nordstrom Rack stores. It is uncertain, however, if Hudson's Bay outlets would include merchandise purchased specifically for the outlet like Nordstrom Rack.

These Hudson's Bay Outlet locations could be carved out of existing Hudson's Bay stores and could possibly even replace smaller, less productive Bay locations. Former Zellers stores not taken by Target or Walmart could be utilized. This is just speculation for now. Hudson's Bay is eventually looking to close lesser-productive store locations and clearance outlets may be a way to optimize currently under-performing store real estate.

Nordstrom Rack is also actively searching for Canadian retail space for as many as 20 or more stores, according to Nordstrom spokesperson Colin Johnson. Executives at RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust, owners of several outlet malls, confirm Nordstrom Rack's current search for locations. We can expect Nordstrom Rack store announcements in the near future according to our Nordstrom Insider in Seattle.

personal note - I am intrigued by the fact that HBC plans to open their outlet stores "Canada-wide". I wonder if this will also include the Maritimes (as frequently Canada seems to terminate east of Montreal in many people's minds). If HBC includes the Maritimes in their plans, I could see them locating in Dartmouth Crossing or Bayer Lake in Halifax, or possibly the old Zellers location in the Superstore Mall in Moncton, or perhaps in the Mapleton Centre next to BB&B. That's a pretty large vacant retail space too. It will be interesting to see how this pans out......

Fossil, Inc. is currently seeking an energetic Store Manager with an entrepreneurial, sales driven spirit for our store in Dieppe (Champlain Place), New Brunswick. Candidates should be able to strategically recruit, train, and develop a productive store team whose primary focus is promoting our brand while offering exceptional customer service. They should inspire and encourage teamwork towards successfully achieving sales goals and upholding daily operations...most importantly, creating a fun and energized environment!

We've known about Fossil coming to Champlain Place on this forum now since last fall (at least), but it is still nice to see things moving forward!

Hmm, I'm not so sure about this new concept store from HBC. Sounds like a watered-down, cheaper version of the Bay... i.e. Zellers? They may even be using some of the old stores. I'm still hoping for the return of a full fledged Hudson's Bay store for New-Brunswick... ideally downtown Moncton.

There should be a sign going up somewhere in the mall soon if they're already hiring. Haven't noticed anything yet.

The Aveda store at Champlain Place has opened.

This store occupies only half of the footprint of the original tenant. The remaining space appears to be just the right size for a store like l'Occitane en Provence, at least given the size of the l'Occitane store at the Halifax Shopping Centre. I would bet anything that this is where l'Occitane will be going. There would be a certain synergy with Aveda next door......

Another black lacquer facade in Champlain, it's getting old, classy or not. All new tenants or renovated stores are either glossy black or white. Two words; Plain Jane.
Just a detail, but prominent nonetheless, even the Showcase (As seen on TV) store is black...

I would agree that there is much more uniformity in store design at Champlain Place now than there ever was in the past, but Cadillac Fairview seems to have made a concerted effort to turn the place into a super-regional fashion mall and have spent many millions of dollars in refurbishing the interior. I'm sure part of the package is to encourage tenants to adopt minimum standards for the appearances of their facades when they choose to renovate.

Agreed, but I've been to many other malls, some are CF properties, some are much more high-end than Champlain and I've never seen store frontages that look such alike. It's redundant. They should mix it up a bit, classy doesn't mean uniform all the way.

I'd say Champlain Place in on the lower end of Cadillac Fairview properties in terms of quality (stores, decor, size etc..) but it's still the most ''high-end'' mall in New-Brunswick by a healthy margin. Moncton is doing quite well in terms of retail given the size of the market. It's the smallest city for which several brands are located in Canada. Comparing it to some of CF's monster malls, like Carrefour Laval isn't fair (not saying you did this, just pointing out that Champlain can seem puny/bland in comparison, but really isn't all that bad for NB)

I'd say its just a product of the times...most stores in Champlain have renovated in the last 2 years or so and the trend is minimalist decor right now...perhaps it's somewhat derived from the success off Apple products and their design?

I don't think every store looks the same though by any means...just look next door at David's tea...minimalist yes but it's got some color and wood elements in the design as well.

Regardless I feel like the mall is looking better than ever at the moment and in another 20 years I'm sure there will be another mass retrofit and the style of that era will dominate...so if u don't like it just wait a while
