Are they planning to demolish a building at Notre Dame and Princess? That is the site that got them in all sorts of hot water for wanting to essentially gut the buildings between King and Princess along McDermot. I thought they since backed away from those plans.

As for the Garry and York substation, it is to the east of the Gio's site across a backlane. The city has a history of closing lanes in the downtown if it suits a development, ie CentrePoint, so that would seem to not be a barrier. It seems a little odd to me that the Gio's site was reported as being sold yet there is really no public information on who bought it or what their plans are for the site.

This is the parking lot immediately north of Burton Cummings Theatre?

If so, I suppose that a hydro substation might be marginally better than a surface lot in that at least it would define the streetscape somewhat (even if the building would be occupied by machinery instead of people), but it is by no means an ideal place for a substation considering the potential of that site. Even if it couldn't be used to build a multistorey building, even a one-storey commercial space along these lines could fit there. One wonders why Hydro couldn't just go a couple hundred metres west to the vast wasteland that is Notre Dame and Hargrave instead.

If nothing else, at least it's a better option than gutting an entire block of Exchange District buildings to turn them into a substation as MH wanted to a few years ago.

Interesting trivia, that Pizza Pizza is actually closed. It was my go-to late night cheap pizza whenever I'm in Toronto on training.

This actually came up when the need to expand the King St substation first came up. Hydro has a number of high capacity lines running underground to that specific site and to move even three blocks to the west for the Notre Dame and Hargrave site would be a significantly more complex and expensive project. For whatever reason that site was essentially ruled out of the running and instead the new/expanded substation at HSC was moved forward to take some of the load off King St until further plans could be put in place.

The reality of all this new development downtown is that they need reliable acecss to power. If Hydro is to be believed we are already close to a tipping point downtown with taking into account the demands of these upcoming developments.

Sad to hear... it was one of my favourite spots for a late night slice too. I always thought about how great it would be if a few buildings like it popped up on vacant lots in central Winnipeg. I presume that it is being replaced by a 50-storey condo tower?

Thanks for the information. I figured that there had to be a good reason that Hydro was stuck on that particular area. At least there will be a consolation prize of the King St. site opening up for development... hopefully for something more than a surface parking lot.

I was beginning to wonder.

That lot next to the Walker/Cummings Theatre would be WAY too small for a substation.

Speaking of empty lots across from Calvary Temple, anyone know the status of the condo conversion at 448 Hargrave beside the empty lot?

I noticed a little bit of work on the exterior over the past week or two.

However I think they are still trying to sell them as "hard lofts" (bring-your-own-contractor) which may be a harder sell in Winnipeg especially given the size of the units.

That lot is owned by Pre-Con. Don't expect anything to change (maybe a dollar store of some type).

went for a 45 min. walk at lunch. passed site work at portage & main, Alt Hotel going up, stumbled across 48 unit apartment starting construction, visited a bustling show suite for Glasshouse and check out a tent for tomorrow's announcement of a new grand scale condo development....then stopped at Parlour to hear someone I know talking about a new 20 storey condo development in a VERY nice spot that he is working on.

Tommorow you should do the Waterfront walk and see The District Condos, Brick's Furniture, Sky phase 2, the Boutique Hotel, H2O, and Youcube phase 2 all under construction/renovation.
