^ There's a rather large parkade standing between CCW and the arena lands. Not sure it would be easy to put a pedway through it.

There's been rumors of a new underground pedway between City Centre Mall and the new arena. Some have said the east food court would close to make way for this new underground pedway, while others figure the tunnel will hook up to the west food court.

^ Still makes no sense; the value would be minimal-to-nonexistent for the mall, the cost would be outrageously huge to tunnel under the existing parkade structure, plus they would lose leaseable retail space in the process.

The pedway plan would envision moving Talbot Petit to another location, building a short structure on 2nd level to the 102 street parade, removing the second level parking from West side of the parkade to allow for an enclosed pedway, then connecting the ECC pedway over top 103 Avenue to the new arena and entertainment structures by way of the World Health Club gym (note on google maps I see this red building with a Stantec sign on the second level, so World Health might have vacated this location in the past 5 years). The bright red building is key to tieing in the Arena and Entertainment district to the central business district.

ECC gains valuable foot traffic in the winter time and the potential for additional customers. Additionally Sutton Place hotel and Delta hotel would be tied into the pedway system to the entertainment district. This would help the city pull traffic into the CBD after 5pm weekday.

If the ECC does not want to go the pedway route, I asked earlier if Edmonton has a pedway bylaw similar to Calgary's Plus 15 bylaw. Basically under Calgary bylaw standards, ECC would not have a choice and would have to install a pedway when such a structure was warranted.

I understand that retail space facing outside along the arena's ground floor has been shelved, but based on the current design, will there be enough ground-level space in the arena so that adding retail space can at least be considered sometime in the future?

The SEC will have retail, the NEC a community rink, the west will be Oiler Foundation offices, with the south being dressing rooms and other internal operations. That area remains my biggest concern... but it can be dealt with by good exterior treatment, light, landscaping.

I looked at the layout of the arena. The south part of the arena along 104 Street looks like empty space Won't the dressing rooms and other internal operations be located in the southeast and southwest corners? It looks that way...

I thought I read somewhere that the media area will be viewable from 104 ave... i.e. people will be able to watch player interviews (such as HNIC's After Hours) from 104 Ave? I could have misunderstood though.

It sure will be exiting to see everything take shape. Is it possible that we could see other parts of the arena district start construction before the arena or is everything going to start at the same time.

1. If the CRL comes into effect soon, will that include Fox and Ultima condos?
2. Why doesn't the CRL include the park west of RBC? Isn't that proposed for a new tower?

I believe so yes for those possessions are not taking place until after the CRL would be in place.

Didn't notice that, odd.

1. No, because the CRL only applies to buildings that are built after it comes into effect. Fox and Ultima were started before, therefore won't be applicable.
2. The city scaled back the original proposed boundaries of the CRL after receiving input for the Province. I believe that this is one of the areas that were dropped.

Now that the vote is done and the arena is approved by majority of council, would it not be wise to get the shovels in the ground before someone thinks a plebiscite is needed. I am very nervous now that the mayor is stepping down . Be rest assured that everyone who is opposed to the arena will be working hard to have a council elected who will hold a plebiscite. We as formers need to be on guard and we need to also find or choice for a mayor and council who will continue to take Edmonton forward. Edmonton is a great city, so lets all keep it great and never allow those who live in the past to take Edmonton backwards again. .
