I'm really glad that they're keeping Building A and restoring it to its former glory.
Building B: Meh. Glass wall on Graville, nothing wrong with that and as long as there's animation there it's fine.
Building C? I don't care if it's an art deco blank wall...it's an art deco BLANK WALL. Get rid of that nonsense! Surely the - what, 5% - interesting bit of the wall can be preserved and the rest of the ugliness removed.

The Centre for the Performing Arts sold ahead of the VIFF
The film festival must find a new venue

Dave White
May 16, 2013 8:07 pm

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver International Film Festival is in a scramble, with word The Centre for the Performing Arts has been sold to an evangelical church. Dozens of screenings were planned in late September and October for what was to be the festival’s main venue.

Executive Director Jacqueline Dupuis says festival organizers didn’t see it coming.

“Obviously we were shocked,” she adds. “We’re still reeling from the news, and as everyone’s aware, we also lost our main venue for last year, the Granville Seven, so we were really looking forward to this.”

There were up to three screenings a day planned at the Centre over a 16-day period. Dupuis says that means up to 50,000 audience members will have to be moved to other venues, but she’s confident the festival and its partners can work something out.

The church takes over the Centre at Homer and Robson Streets in August.

Dupuis feels it’s is a big loss to Vancouver’s arts community.

the west side could really use a movie theatre complex, i wonder how well a multiplex would do out at UBC

anyway - will the 3 buildings that form the theatre now become retail or bars? has it already been decided or will the whomever want the spaces have to apply for say a bar license etc?

i call marshalls going in one of the spaces

"Building A" is just the facade of the original building on the site.
Same kind of Heritage Preservation is being done with the former CIBC bank beside Burger King further north on this block.

The art-deco facade still has an art-deco theatre within that building.

Proposal for 1099 Richards, amazing the transformation of Seymour and Richards over the last few years.

Quote:
To develop the site with a 13-storey residential building with two and a half levels of underground parking accessed from the lane. The building will
contain 162 units of low cost housing
I'm guessing they are going for something similar to 60W Cordova with regards to low cost housing.

Edited, should've been Richards, not Seymour.

Should that read 1099 Richards? Seems like it is the sister site to 508 Helmcken.

Corrected above post, don't beleive this project is related to 508 site, that would be 1121 Seymour.

1121 Seymour is tied to 1300 Richards.
1099 Richards is tied to 508 Helmcken.

It does?! In what kind of shape--restorable or reconstructable?

I've been in most of the theatres inside the 'plex, but don't recall anything looking like it may have still retained its original theatre layout.

If I'm not mistaken that's incorrect, it's 1107 Seymour that is tied to 1300 Richards, and you are correct 1099 is tired to 508 Helmcken I was mistaken.
1121 Seymour is a separate proposal not tied to either, sheesh the amount of development is confusing.

The lease sign was posted today for this project @ 855 Granville.
You can see how the glass is articulated in the centre facade.

We're losing an important cultural venue (VIFF) for that?

It's been closed for a while now. Agreed on the horribly uncomfortable seating.

Oops that's right - got 1107 and 1121 mixed up.

1099 Richards (Helmcken side) from Changing City Updates:

***

The articulated glass looks good. With the McDonalds near Smithe and the Old Navy at Robson, there'll be a few modern buildings on that side of the street. The other side seems to have more of the new modern glass retail facades (the now empty QuickSilver and Puma, etc.).

Is it going to be like a mini-mall inside with access to the adjacent building through the middle one?
