Here is an example for you of a Mormon Church with a mural. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Skyline+H...lAz7vDlANWgncHG9Q&cbp=12,279.87,,1,-9.73

Just because there is a religious mural doesn't mean that it was painted by any religion especially if it is not on a church.

The mural on the building in question may not be religious in nature, the developer liked the work of the artist and wanted them to paint another mural.

Just to clarify for everyone, the renderings are two different buildings in two different locations. The mural building is proposed at 6th West and N. Temple, the other building is proposed on 9th E, just south of Office Max.

Here is the website of the artists. http://mac-arte.blogspot.com/search?upda...=2014-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=2

They have done some pretty amazing stuff including the mural in the new Adobe building in Lehi. I would be more than happy to have their art on a residential property in my neighborhood.

Another interesting thing, type "salt lake city mural" into google, and guess what comes up first, the mural in question (at least in my iteration of google)

more information about the SixtyNine Seventy competition.

http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/article-77-17483-sixtynine-seventy-competition.html

Quote:
The competition brings the wild and the weird imaginations of planners and architects from as far away as China and Thailand to give two blocks of Salt Lake City an extreme makeover. The ideas vary from practical to practically insane, but all will be considered by a panel of judges that includes architects as well as local government leaders, such as Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams.
I am assuming that the proposal as shown in that photos are on display at the SLC RDA office on Main Street. Please, somebody go check them out and take photos to post on here!

Quote:
The SixtyNine Seventy Project focused on the blocks bordered by West Temple and State Street between 100 South and 200 South, not counting State Street itself. The area has a number of publicly owned lots, alleys and streets that could use a little gussying up. Wilson says that by focusing on these small connecting spaces, the city can craft a design that gives the area a distinctive character and makes it a destination.

SixtyNine Seventy past and upcoming events

Fyi, I'm a little too late in posting this event that occurred last week. Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe all the proposals are in the former GAP store in the Rio Grande building at the Gateway.

Portland is getting a convention hotel with minimal funding from government

(I am posting this here, because of the current controversy of the convention hotel in downtown.) Fyi, here in Portland a 600 room convention hotel is being developed with little funding from the local government.

http://www.oregonlive.com/front-porch/in...er_hotel_metro.html#incart_river_default

Quote:
Metro, the tri-county regional government that oversees the convention center, is still negotiating with the development team behind the proposal, led by Mortenson Development of Minneapolis. The developers have proposed using lodging tax proceeds generated by the hotel to help finance its construction.
The 30-year rebate on the lodging tax would help make payments on an up-front loan. Over that period, the reinvested tax revenue could add up to $111 million, according to the developer's projections.

The lodging tax is currently deposited into a fund intended to attract tourism. Metro, the City of Portland and Multnomah County would all have to approve a change.

The subsidy is necessary, developers and Metro officials say, so the Oregon Convention Center can reserve a block of rooms for out-of-town events. Travel Portland, which books the convention center, says the absence of a hotel that can accommodate large groups in one location is costing the center business.

First of. I think considering that a mural of the sort is not just religious but cultural especially with west side artistic influences like Ruby Chacon and her Mestizo coffee/art shop in the same vacinity. The west side is a mix of cultures. The trax sration displays the same style of art. The over pass columns by Jackson elementary also have the same type inner city mural. While "mormom" influence on the culture is less colorfull and has more of a solid feel to things catholosism is not the main reason for this type of mural. The latino and especially chicano influence greatly identify with images especially of the virgin mother or virgen de guadalupe. I like it. It gives it its own identity while showing recognition to the neighboor hood its in

The developers on 600 West are not proposing to recreate the virgin Mary on this building. They only used that as an example of a mural. They used it as a demonstration. Whatever ends up on that structure may be religious in nature but will not replicate the mural that already exists downtown. I, for one, really like the mural despite the lack of religion in my own personal life.

Orlando, the RDA doesn't have an office on Main Street. I believe the Downtown Alliance does. The 69/70 project has already been judged. The top projects will then go on display at The Leondardo where the public will be able to help choose a winner.

Zims Building

One thing that interests me about architecture is the cycle of what's en vogue. Today we cherish the style of buildings from the late 1800s and 1900s as being historic and a nod to the craftsmanship of the past. Anything from the Mid Century period where they tried to streamline everything is out of style.
Obviously at the time, covering up a gorgeous building with hideous paneling was the way to go.

I like the idea of turning that building into office space. I think that would be a much better use of the building than a single retailer in the bottom level.

I love that they're restoring it--I just thought those would make some great residential lofts/spaces. Office space is fine too. More life on that block is always a good thing.

I think the mural (whether it's religious or not) is interesting, it's colorful, it's so much better than a blank brick wall. I'm glad they're considering it for the new building. I'm excited to see what the artists come up with.

When I first moved back to Utah, when Zims was getting ready to close up shop, I went with the realtor and viewed the building on State St. I was hoping to put a financial package together to turn it into residential lofts, but alas I wasn't able to pull together the financing, and the timing was horrible as we were in the middle of the recession at the time. Having seen many warehouse conversions into residential while in Cleveland, I saw so much potential for that building as residential.

Anyway, while I would love for it to be residential, I am glad that something is being done with it, especially restoring the facade. The floors inside are original wood and I would hope that they would keep those and the columns in place as they rehabilitate it. I would love it if they were able to retrofit the old cargo elevator with new mechanical, but have it be the main elevator for the building.

While I love seeing the old Zims building coming back alive I wonder if Office space is the best use for it. Housing would of been better. Four floors of Zims + Seven floors of 101 Tower could of been 11 floors filled up at the much waited future PAC tower.

It looks like they are diving right into things with the hotels lot. They have set up equipment and trailers on-site and are removing pavement where the new parking structure will be built.

They do have a permit to construct the parking garage. That area of the property also has some pretty significant environmental cleanup that is required due to some of the former industrial uses in the area. That will take some time to mitigate.

Salt Lake City, Provo-Orem areas ranked high by Forbes as best cities with jobs

By Jasen Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/86557...-by-Forbes-as-best-cities-with-jobs.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s economy continues to garner national attention as the state’s two largest metropolitan areas have landed among the employment elite.

Forbes magazine announced that Salt Lake City ranked No. 3 for “Best Big Cities for Jobs for 2013" with 4 percent employment growth last year. This year, the state’s capital city is ranked No. 16 overall economically. Salt Lake City trailed only the San Francisco and Nashville, Tenn., metro areas in the nationwide survey.

UtPlanner, or anyone who might know. Will this remodel improve the engagement with Main? Particularly the patio expansion.

Renovation set for revered Little America Coffee Shop

Dining » New interior, expanded patio, but same menu on tap for iconic SLC spot.

By Heather May | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/56275057-79/coffee-shop-america-dining.html.csp

On Monday, the restaurant will close for remodeling. However, breakfast, lunch and dinner will still be available next door in the steakhouse dining room. The renovation takes place at the same time the first floor of the downtown hotel, 500 South Main, also receives a face-lift...

...The restaurant renovations — the decor is still being decided — are part of a larger overhaul, whose price tag has not been set. The east side hotel entrance will move closer to the middle of Main Street. There will be an expanded lounge, and the retail shops will open to the perimeter of the lobby for "meandering, boutique-like shopping," Fery said.

Renovation of the steakhouse is expected to begin in January.

At the Coffee Shop, the outdoor patio will be expanded from 15 seats to 60. An overhead trellis and misting system will be added for more comfortable summer dining, and a fireplace and radiant heaters will be installed for cooler nights...
