Thanks for the diagram Fenwick. I was trying to explain how it worked to a friend the other day. Now I can just show them this.
If you look closely they have been inserting the tie backs since they started the wall. However, they have now reached bedrock on the market street side so I don't believe they will need further retaining walls as the rock is strong enough.

They will be blasting until they start pouring concrete - they have to do many smaller ones so they don't rattle the neighbors too much. They must have 15-20 trucks on hauling material. I think some of it is going in the basin at the Ceres port. Ceres was said to be doing an environmental assessment last year to add a third berth so they might as well get a good deal on fill while there is plenty of supply.

Yeah I noticed what was going on down at Ceres. They have been lining up the fill with the existing structures, looks like they will be expanding almost all the way to Africville.

It was installing new HVAC on the CIBC roof. The street was shut down to allow for the work. I got some photos of that work too:

I can't believe how hideous the TD building was allowed to become over the last few years. Couldn't they have found matching replacement panels, or at least made it look a little more deliberate? As it stands currently it is one of the shoddiest looking highrises in the entire country.

I have been checking the Nova Centre excavation on the Nova Scotia webcams almost daily - http://www.novascotiawebcams.com/halifax/nova-centre-construction.html but it is not the same as seeing it in person. For those who live in the Halifax area, do you have any estimates on the depth of excavation at various locations on the site?

I wonder if the final design plans are close to completion so they can be submitted to the Design Review Committee and then the city planning department for permits.

Thank you for the closeup pictures.

I would guess that the excavation is about 2/3 complete. Still there is a lot of rock to be removed.

My impression was that Rank is building this development and then leasing space to the province and city. Is it normal for the government to expect every sub-contract to require an open public competition in a situation like that?

I'm still curious about what we'll see in terms of the approval process for this building. I thought that this would proceed normally under HbD, which already includes height allowances for this project. In other words, it would still go to the Design Review Committee.

Yes maybe your right. But I think it would be prudent to at least invite more than one person to the table. Even just out of curiosity..
