Bite Groceteria

I visited Bite Groceteria on Thursday:

Bite Groceteria i8228 by ferreth, on Flickr

It is a pretty big space, certainly big enough to cover your basic grocery needs if they chose to go that route. However, it is more of a specialty shop, with some basic groceries added. I spent some time talking to one of the grocers, they said there intention is replace as much of the brand name generic product with local or specialty product as possible.

The inside is nicely decorated:

Unfortunately, it is woefully empty at 5pm on a Thursday afternoon. I saw perhaps 2 or 3 people in there at most during my time there. Hopefully this will improve over time, as they do have some interesting products, including a bulk selection, and some great cheese. If you are interested, you can try any cheese they have. Unfortunately, there was no Rye bread or Duck Pate to be had. They do seem eager to please, and are trying to figure out what sells in the area. I walked out with $20 worth of cheese that was reasonably priced for the quality I got, and some smoked almonds that I will pass on next time. If I lived in Inglewood, I could come in here for all my treats, but not for basic shopping. This place could co-exist with an Urban Sobeys store in the area just fine.

Nordstrom Article. Remaining 40k new court space will be used to target other first to market retailers.

Quote:
CALGARY — The expansion of American retail giant Nordstrom to Chinook Centre next year will open the door for more first-to-market retailers at the popular Calgary shopping mall.

Eve Renaud, property manager at Chinook Centre, said Nordstrom will be taking up 140,000 square feet of the 180,000 square feet formerly occupied by Sears at the north end of the mall.

“The extra 40,000 square feet will be new court space, new common area,” said Renaud. “Our leasing team is working at securing some new first-to-market retailers in the remaining space.

“We haven’t confirmed that just yet just because we are under negotiations with several retailers. So we’re just confirming how we’re going to be filling the space at this point.”

She said the new retailers, four to six of them, will be located immediately adjacent to the Nordstrom store.

Nordstrom is expected to open in the fall of 2014 at Chinook.

The American retailer announced last fall it was expanding its brand with a new location at Chinook.

Calgary’s Chinook Centre has reached a new record level for sales at the shopping mall as it continues to change it retail mix with new stores opening this year.

The 1.2 million-square-foot mall hit the $1,108 sales per square foot figure in February, which was a six per cent hike from last year. That level puts it in the same category as national shopping malls Yorkdale and Pacific Centre.

In the shopping centre industry, sales per square feet of non-anchor tenants is a good gauge of a mall’s productivity.

Chinook Centre, with about 250 stores, is not resting on its laurels as it continues to change its retail mix.

Upcoming new store openings include J. Crew in June, Eileen Fisher in August, and TopShop in the fall.

Two restaurants — Double Zero and State & Main — are expected to open later this year as well.

American giant retailer Target is also scheduled to open this spring with no firm date released yet.

Hate to b urst your bubble, but the Market Mall has been in the same state of product depolyment for the past month. The only added since Easter was the delivery of Target grocery carts. The products for linens and beauty items were delivered in mid March.

I am starting to question why the hold up in opening Market Mall location. The first series of Target openning were completed 1 month ahead of the official openning. Now it appears as although Target is nolonger soft openning stores ahead of official openning.

I don't mind Target. I much prefer it over Walmart.

Sephora is opening a location in downtown Calgary at The CORE (jobs posted to the mall's website). Good score for the mall, together with the new-ish Michael Kors, they are slowly collecting high quality tenants. Apple store would be the next benchmark retailer...

The old Safeway site on 17 Ave SE just got a construction fence around it, wonder what's happening with the site?

I heard that (most) of the "Spring opening" Target stores have been ready to roll for awhile. Target is having trouble getting some of it's stock in place. Speaking of that, I saw the distribution building in Balzac, and fak it's big!

They apparently will open all the Western Canada stores (the ones that have the Spring opening timeframe) on the same day??

for starbucks fans the locations inside target and safeway chapters etc aren't "Real" starbucks and they don't usualy offer the same benefits for cardholders that a real/corporate starbucks offers so keep that in mind when choosing a starbucks

No, the ones in Chapters are indeed "real" starbucks as are the ones inside Albertsons in the US. The ones in Safeway are licenced concept stores but I'm not sure about Target here or in the US. The ones I absolutely know are licenced concept units are the ones in airports.

maybe it varies - the one in the hyatt in vancouver is a concept and the chapters here never gave me the free stuff - soy which starbucks used to do but they have since eliminated that from their card/rewards thing - the only good thing about the card now is $1 off something or accumalating enough for a free drink

So I was driving by the Target at Market Mall last night and I saw a Sobey's delivery truck pulling into the Target loading bay. Is Sobey's going to be the grocery supplier for Target or does this speak to the supply chain issues they are experiencing?

Yes, Sobey's/Empire food group is the Canadian Supplier of grocery food products for Target.
