Saw these in the Liverpool photo thread. This is exactly the kind of modern architecture I am craving for Montreal. These sorts of buildings would look fantastic along the Lachine Canal or the river.

I have to say that the new condo buildings on Bishop have really improved the look of the area. Bishop below St. Catherine used to be one of the ugliest blocks downtown. The new condos may look cheap and a little ugly, but they have really added something that was missing before. It's really great to see this part of downtown inhabited. And I am a little glad that it wasn't 40 storey glass condo towers either.

I would like to see 8-12 floors become the norm for building heights downtown (west of Peel) north of René-Lévesque and below de Maisonneuve.

^Then you shall receive. The city has zoned all the available lots between ste-catherine and rene-levesque at 35m. An exception was made for Samcon's Drummond. But 35m is the new norm in the area. I read that somewhere here or SSC a couple weeks ago. I'm fine with that too, and I agree with your assessment of the Bishop additions. It will help tremendously, it already does.

Walked by the Habitations Jeanne-Mance today. I think the hatred for them is a little overblown. The buildings seemed to be in good condition, there is a bit of greenery around them, and they are definitely less ugly/dumpy than most of the ones in the Concordia ghetto.

Having said that, Berri Street is awful. The unfinished ilot Voyageur is depressing (and the inside walls of the uncompleted top part are covered in graffiti). The ugly old bus terminal should be knocked down. And then there is that huge vacant lot on the west side next to the Grande Bibliothèque.

Scorn towards the urbanism (and not the social aspect) of the HJM is well merited.

HJM breaks the street grid east of St-Laurent completely wipe out any street life along Ontario and maisonneuve streets. Maisonneuve is turned into a desolate street lined by 3 storey brown brick buildings that belong on the fringes of Brossard, instead here they are breaking the narrative between downtown and Quartier Latin.

I'm not against them in principle, if anthing downtown needs more affordable housing, but I am against shitty 50's urbanism that shuns the street in favour of projects that ignores it.

Berri always seemed like another world to me. There are so many drug addicts and aggressive people.

But the borough said some are crumbling and will be difficult to save. If a residential property is built, other challenges will involve traffic and parking, the borough said.

“It’s a monumental building and preserving it presents monumental challenges,” Sud-Ouest borough Benoit Dorais said in a press release.

“All options are on the table,” he added. “We hope to see a project that meets the principles and values that inspired the development of the area in recent years — an inclusive project where families play an important role, one that is focused on sustainable development and the history and identity of the neighbourhood.”

Groups already consulted include Heritage Montreal, Parks Canada and Solidarité Saint-Henri. Guy Giasson, president of the Société historique de Saint-Henri, said the group hopes any redevelopment of Canada Malting will preserve and reuse the complex, as other former plants on the canal have been.

Other industrial buildings have been turned into condos and artist lofts.

Pas content qu'ils détruises les victoriennes, mais j'aime bien le design de l'édifice. I'm torn on this one. This project would really help out Bishop a great deal though.

La disparition des maisons victoriennes je l'ai en travers de la gorge. Je ne croyais pas qu'on pouvait encore sacrifier le patrimoine architectural à Montréal en 2013 -même et surtout au nom de la culture !!!

Montréal, ville du design ? Mon cul !!! Le design c'est également la protection de ce que les générations précédentes nous ont légués et là, avec ce nouveau pavillon du MBAM, nous ratons une belle occasion d'être créatifs et d'oser. Plutôt, on a choisi la facilité. Au liue de préserver les maisons et construire quelque chose d'innovateur voire même de précurseur on a préféré la solution bulldozer. Jean Drapeau serait fier de nous !!
