In addition, the fence has a PCL Cover note on it.

I have also heard that the reason the rig is there now to do some loading testing on the Caissons... apparently that hasn't been done in Winnipeg in a very long time. Additionally my source tells me that this project is condos not a hotel. But that info could be off.

Should be a fairly interesting project to watch.

A side note: What ever happened to the Fort Rouge Yards Development? Is that actually going to happen or did the City throw that 10 Million dollar loan in the garbage?

fair enough but building a condo with no display suites presales and advertisements is nonsensical

I'm really nervous about this Weston Hotel development at Portage and Main. I mean, this is a huge project at Canada's most famous intersection. This is a big deal. If this project isn't done right, especially with the design, we could be in for a lot of trouble. And with the way some people around here are describing the architect, Ray Wan, I don't feel too confident he really cares what this looks like.

This needs to be done right. If not, then he needs to be strung up and dragged out of town by wild horses. No excuses.

do you think this kept so secret because they fear public will oppose the design

I really don't know. But honestly, this whole process seems a little shady.

This part is true.

A Whiskey Dix nightclub and waterpark? I'm down!

(guzzles some vodka and jumps down the slide, maybe tries to pick up bikini-wearing girls at the bottom of the slide)

Just past through the Free Press website which had me thinking; There is no way that such a high profile location will go unreported once a reporter sees the giant PCL fence there. I give it a couple of days tops before an article is printed, whether in depth or not.

The reason they are not announcing it is because they want to be completely certain that they are going ahead before they do. They are taking it to a final costing with all the geotechnical testing done before they green light it. It must not have condos in it if they are doing no presales at all.

My guess is 20-22 stories of hotel and 5 or so of office.

Sorry to spoil it for you but unfortunately this is how multi-million dollar massive construction projects are done. They don't talk about the project every step of the way in the public in case something goes wrong. This project has been in planning for over a year. Remember there is competition for projects like these. How many possible hotel projects have we heard about this year for downtown? I personally know of 6. If you were building a hotel, wouldn't you want to keep it a secret until you are ready to go so someone doesn't scoop you and ruin the possible tens of millions of dollars you have invested?

Just be happy theses things are even being proposed for Winnipeg now. It has essentially been 20 years since we have had any excitement for downtown, don't get spoiled now.

its funny 90 percent of peggers dont even realize or notice any of this construction activity going on. I dont even think they care or pay attention... when ever i mention to anyone theres going to be like 5 new high rises downtown they act pretty shocked. like they dont pay attention to this stuff in the news or anything. i used to be the same up until a few years ago i never even knew about hydro bldg until it was already complete.. and i just found out about chrm after it had already been a month into construction.

i just hope the fortress development lives up to the hype.. and it compliments,, glasshouse alt, westin hotel convention center expansion, and so/po well
