I don't think some coffee shops and mid-priced restaurants are going to kill the place. Something like Philly's Reading Terminal Market, or Seattle's Pike Place Market, or DC's Eastern Market would be amazing. And Grand Central's going to have to get a lot higher end to get to the level that those markets are already at.
Union Market is the new place to go in DC.

Ugh. That stinks. OTOH, that explains how they'll keep away the homeless encampments that plague other parts of downtown. It's a strange thing about downtown - a lot of the alleys are fenced off, Angel's Flight Park is fenced, all the security people - this adds to a weird fortress DTLA vibe.

Los Angeles State Historic Park to Close for a Year in 2014

Quote:

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – Things in 2014 could be a lot quieter at the Los Angeles State Historic Park.

A yearlong closure is expected for the park still known to many as the Cornfield between January 2014 and January 2015 as part of an $18 million effort to renovate the 32-acre facility, said Sean Woods, a California State Parks superintendent.

Funding for the project was included in this year’s state budget and it will go before the state senate budget committee in mid-May for an expected final approval. Once approved the project will go out to bid in September with construction starting in January, when the park will be closed to the public, Woods said.

The park has become a busy summer concert venue in the past couple of years with events that attract thousands of music fans to shows like Hard Summer, Hard Haunted Mansion, the FYF Fest, H2O Fest and more recently a two-day show in March by The Swedish electronic dance veterans Swedish House Mafia that brought more than 60,000 people to the park throughout the weekend.
The park also hosts dozens of other events like a craft fair, weddings and is a popular place for joggers. Woods said he expects many of the same events to return in 2015.

The plans call for adding a welcome pavilion, a promenade for a farmers market, an amphitheater, wetlands areas and infrastructure improvements such as permanent restrooms.

Isn't that a major problem in DTLA? The homeless population? Several people on this forum have complained about their encounters with the homeless. Pretty much every DT has a similar problem. I am not sure how you deal with it effectively......without becoming 'a fortress' to some degree.

I actually think the park will look nice when the trees grow in more.

The Silver Lake Meadow park has a fence and I haven't found it to be a problem. I have to check out the fence at the Spring Street Park in person but a fence doesn't necessarily have to kill a park.

Kind of sucks. I wonder why they can't close it down segments as opposed to closing the whole park at one time.

Double Marriott, now working on the 16th floor.

Avant's Flower Street wing has reached it's 7th floor, so we should start to see exterior work soon. The Figueroa side is only four floors up.

Eh, I don't mind. Also, the State Historic Park is definitely one of the nicer 'new' parks around, since it actually has grass and trees and not concrete.

Any way the cornfield will ever be able to expand out toward the river? The plans for the fully done up park describes "wetlands" which I assume means some sort of pond?? Like the Piggyback Yards and any other open space within spitting distance to the river, I'd hope that the proximity means that the cornfield can eventually develop a riverfront.

http://downtownexaminer.com/news/building-downtown-from-the-ground-up/

Currently in the works for Eric is helping revive some businesses on Los Angeles St. including King Eddy’s (not only reviving the old bar, but reopening the old basement space as well) and he just signed a deal with a retail and tattoo parlor Crimson Unicorn on Fifth St. He is also leasing Uevolution which is a beautiful workout facility in the basement of the Premiere Towers. And recently signed a very prominent restaurant group out of Hollywood (we are not allowed to spill the details yet) for his new project at 716 S. Spring. The space is amazing with 30ft all glass ceilings, and Eric believes this restaurant will be one of the most popular restaurants in all of Downtown.

Nice! Cant Wait to see the Glass Ceilings

Do I see a couple pile drivers or drilling rigs in that photo? Are those used in demolitions? I thought they were only used for placing new foundation supports. Of course, they are right on the edge of the lot, so might be for some structure other than the tower foundation.

they have been using those for about a month now. i believe they are shoring the sides because they will be building the foundation at the same time they are deconstructing based on what was announced a few months ago

They were working on it even today which was nice to see. There is so much potential for this intersection.. If Van Nuys could get retail in their corner spot, and the SB building there could get retail in that massive underused spot, this could be the hottest intersection in downtown.

(BTW, Van Nuys does seem to be adding some sort of business to the right of their front entrance).

Here is a picture taken a couple days ago of the Spring/7th building you mentioned.

So this is the building that will become the restaurant mentioned in the article posted by LASF with the 30 foot glass ceiling. Sure beats the former "swap meet". Can't wait for this one to come back to life.

The Roster at the Ritz (Wall Street Journal)

The Roster at the Ritz
A luxury condo near Los Angeles's sports arenas attracts athletes and hard-core fans, reflecting the growing popularity of L.A.'s downtown.

Wall Street Journal

By LAUREN SCHUKER BLUM

Owing in part to a slowdown in new condo construction, the Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. LIVE is downtown's most expensive—and most available—luxury residential tower. (Image courtesy of the Wall Street Journal)

"When Hyun-Jin Ryu, the Dodgers' new starting pitcher, first envisioned his move to Los Angeles from South Korea, he imagined himself in a house with a pool in Beverly Hills. Instead, he bought a condo downtown, a grittier part of the city.

In March, Mr. Ryu, 26, purchased a place at the Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. LIVE, paying just under $2 million for a 2,082-square-foot, two-bedroom unit with 10-foot-high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the Hollywood sign. Moving to the Ritz Residences "was a very convenient and appropriate decision for me," he says. "I am very close to the Korean-American community [and] I can see Dodger Stadium from my house..."

FYI, the cranes going up at 9th and olive. Also, not sure whats going on at Mas Malo, but the front windows are covered up. i would be shocked if they are closing since they are full everyday of the week from open to close. im hoping they are taking off the drywall behind the windows so the beauty of the space would be visible from the street.
