Can palm trees grow in this climate? I know they can grow in places like Savannah. It would be nice if they could line the avenues with them, to give it that south Florida feel.

Why the hell would we want to give our signature streets a south Florida feel?

that was my first reaction, but thinking more about it - Ponce de Leon; florida; palms - it could be interesting for a stretch of Ponce. Windmill and Cabbage palms will grow here well, but not the taller ones you see in Florida.

It's not any worse than some of these people wanting it to be just like NY.

I agree. Atlanta should be its authentic self. There's plenty of beautiful foliage that is more native to North Georgia that would work much better.

Newsflash: it won't ever be like New York. I'm not even sure how you could make it more like New York, because the two places are so different in terms of scale, density, geography, history, and way of life.

If you mean some people want tall buildings, more density, better transit, etc....well, that isn't exactly something unique to New York. And Atlanta should (and could) have that. Heaven forbid it starts looking like South Florida, though.

i don't know why you'd want a "south florida feel". maybe a coastal georgia feel? the types of palm trees that grow in south florida don't grow here— those are tropical palms, like spindle palms and royal palms:

however, many of the palm trees that are subtropical that grow in coastal georgia, can grow here also. here are some examples:

the windmill palm:

the sabal palm:

you will often see sabal palms "groomed" that look more like this:

the european fan palm:

and then there are some palms that grow very well on the georgia coast, but if you try to grow them here, you have to keep them warm in the winter or they will die.

the washingtonia palm:

and the sago palm (which is techically a cycad and not a palm— they are an ancient plant form that was around before flowering trees):

I couldn't have said it better. I don't get the feeling that folks on this forum or Atlanta in general wants to be just like New York.

John Lewis Mural in Sweet Aurburn

Atlanta needs more bad ass 3-story murals dedicated to her famous citizens. Martin Luther King, Andrew Young, and maybe even Joel Chandler Harris... like this one of John Lewis I ran into yesterday:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9No5xL-A_q0

Quite a masterpiece IMO. It will look great from the Streetcar... which I must add is moving forward briskly. I walked the entire 2.5 odd mile loop yesterday, shot a lot of video and talked to a few construction workers. Bare with me, I have lots of information to process but a very substantial "Atlanta Streetcar" Update is on the way!!!

one last note: there are a lot of palm trees around in atlanta, just most are on private property. they aren't indigenous to the area, but they are indigenous to parts of georgia further south. with the climate warming up, palm trees grow here better than they have in past years.

you can see palm trees in intown atlanta in neighbourhoods like cabbagetown and piedmont heights where people have planted them in prominent areas. i wouldn't be opposed to palm trees being used instead of the other non-shade trees commonly used such as holly and crepe myrtles when trees atlanta does its plantings.

back to construction— i know this is pretty far out, but does anyone know what is happening at the corner of haynes bridge road and north point drive? i figured it might just be another shopping center, but i'm hoping it's something a with a little more urban-oriented design.

Soooo, no more highrise developments for Atlanta??!! Whats up with that? I feel like I should be seeing at least two developments in Atlantic station, one near the BOA building, and a new tallest building floating around in plans somewhere. At this rate we will never catch up to Chicago or NewYork.

+1

It seems like the developers in this town are slow to move and constantly miss market signals. Plus half of them only know how to build Wal-marts.

My best bet sites for highrise construction: 1) Dewberry property 10th & Ptree; 2) vacant land on Ptree south of Ritz downtown with the marta 'entrance'; 3) Rooms to go site in Buckhead 4) Atlantic Station on north end of their property; 5) old Picard (?) Chilton site on Cent. Hill; 6) Dewberry 17th street property; 7) previous Mandarin site on Ptree in midtown; Would love to see a significant tower (800+) on any of those.

Shell Station on Peachtree in Midtown & Northside at Howell Mill

Anybody know anything about upcoming projects on these sites?
I meant to respond to this awhile ago, not sure what happened.....

I sent Dewberry an e-mail awhile back recommending they turn the shell station into Felini's, Taqueria Del Sol or something of the sorts. To which they responded that they had already signed a deal to reopen the gas station, but to make a lot of improvements. Supposedly it is more upscale with much more amentities, which isn't saying alot because the old store had about 20-30 things for sale. They've closed in from the front building to the car wash and poured the slab recently. At the end of the video you can kind of see the new cinderblock wall. Not sure of a target date.

Also, I saw some site work on Northside Drive just south of Howell Mill Rd., near Local Three the restaurant. Any idea what this is?

I haven't heard anything about the new Buckhead high school recently, any idea when construction will be finished?
